Hey Folks,

I am a new user of VirtualBox today is the first day I installed it. Till now I had been using VMWare at work.

I am here because of an issue. Lets have a look at my set-up first.

Host OS: WinXP SP3
Guest OS: WinXP SP3

I connect to internet using USB Modem. It works fine on both Host and Guest OSes. I have an external USB hard drive. It gets detected on the Host but not on Guest.

Since I use USB Modem and can connect to internet from both the OSes, the USB drivers are properly installed I guess or is it the case that VirtualBox does not use the USB modem but is connecting in some other way to internet ? ? ? ?

If it is using the USB modem, then this means that the USB mass storage drivers are not functioning properly? ? ? ?

You should have read and followed the Forum Posting Guide before opening a topic. It clearly states that you should use a sensible name, you haven't done that.

Now for the problem:
VB uses NAT networking by default, thus if the Host has internet, so does the Guest. No USB is used in any way by VB or the Guest.
If you want to have your external hard drive in the VM, you can do two things:
- Set up Shared Folders and connect to that shared folder to access the external hard drive. Both the Host and Guest can use it at the same time. See the manual for more information.
- Enable USB and pass the device to the VM. Right click on the USB icon in the status bar and select the device you want to have in the VM. The Host must NOT have it mounted in any way if possible. If you accessed the drive once, it might stay busy and you will be unable to pass the device through to the VM. There are several ways to solve this, one of them is to use a specific filter in the VM settings so the device gets grabbed automatically when connected if the VM is running. Again, see manual for more information.
