USB Problem! Urgent Help!

Post by azzronulation »

I'm in disparate need of getting the USB Devices to stop being "Greyed out"

I've trawled the internet with no luck.

I'm running Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 and on the VB i'm running Windows Vista.
I have the latest PUEL of VirtualBox

That's a screen shot of what appears when i try to attach a USB device, in this case, my external hard drive.

I've tried a lot of solutions, but none to work.
I've tried:

no luck.

Please could someone help!!

Go here and do what it says. Then see if it works for you. All about USB related Questions
Also make sure the Guest additions are installed on the guest.

I've come across this in the manual

"In order to use VirtualBox's USB support, the user account under which you intend to run VirtualBox must have read and write access to the USB filesystem (usbfs)."

how do i do this?

Did you read the link I sent you?
Your login name must be in the vboxusers group.
Then you need to add some information to the fstab file.
It's all outlined in the link I sent you.

Open a terminal then type sudo -i press enter and use your password
then cd /etc
then type gedit fstab if you are using the gnome desktop or use what ever you use to edit.

Thankyou.

unfortunatly this hasn't helped.

I've come across two options but i have no idea how to do them.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VirtualBox/USB

and this, in the manual;

USB and advanced networking support

In order to use VirtualBox's USB support, the user account under which you intend to run VirtualBox must have read and write access to the USB filesystem (usbfs).

In addition, access to /dev/net/tun will be required if you want to use Host Interface Networking, which is described in detail in the section called “Bridged networking”.

I'm just wondering excactly how to do this. (run VirtualBox with read & write access in the USB filesystem)

Have you even read the link I sent you?

All you need to do is add the following to the fstab.

Code: Select all

none /sys/bus/usb/drivers usbfs devgid=501,devmode=664 0 0
replace the 501 with the actual number that the vboxusers group has.
Make sure that you are in the vboxusers group by running the following

Code: Select all

usermod -aG vboxusers <your username>
And have installed the guest additions in the guest.
Please read the following link.
