USB devices grayed out

I am running a Vista guest on an Ubuntu host using a PUEL install. I am a member of the vboxusers group.

When I look at the devices menu, all the USB devices that I specified by creating filters for them are listed, but grayed out. It does not seem to matter whether they are mounted on the host system or not.

What am I missing?

Thanks,

Paul

I should have mentioned that yes, the guest additions are installed. and I've rebooted the Windows guest machine many times (try something, reboot, try something, reboot, etc).

I had the same problem so I made a video of how I solved the problem (see link above) not sure if it will work for you but take a look and see.

@pfaulstich,
Are you really using the OSE version of VBox?
If so then that is the problem. USB is not supported in the OSE version.

Hi Paul,

You're not alone in this. I have exactly the same on some of my USB devices. Like you, I'm using PUEL and I'm in the Vbox user group. I've re-installed Vbox and Guest Additions. I've tried Dai's advice above. But no joy. These devices used to work until I upgraded Ubuntu, then some kept working but two of them, both Canon printers, stopped. They're enabled in Vbox, but greyed out in XP.

Wish I could help!

That seems to happen a lot.
