Hi,
I have recently upgraded to version 3.0.6 for windows hosts and I cannot get the application to run anymore.
When I try and start the virtual box software, both the VBoxSVC.exe and VirtualBox.exe processes are started but the main screen fails to appear.
Also, I can terminate the VirtualBox.exe process using task manager, but I cannot terminate the VBoxSVC.exe process.
I have fully unistalled the application, deleted my virtual machines, rebooted and reinstalled but I get the same problem.
I am using windows XP with service pack 2.
Any ideas?

That, I am sorry to say, I cannot remember. I think it was a version of version 3.

Re: VirtualBox 3.0.6 fails to execute
Two things that you can do to see if you can get this installed:
1. Right click on the install program and then left click on run as admin.
or
2a If that fails you need to reinstall version 2.2.0 and select repair. (DO NOT reboot)
2b Run the version 2.2.0 install again and tell it to uninstall (DO NOT reboot)
2c Run the new Version 3.0.x install and see if it works (This time reboot)
The above was written for users that had this problem upgrading from version 2.x.x but should work if you can find the version that you used previously. Just substitute the version number you used.
You should be able to look in the .virtualbox/machine folder and find the log files. Look at the top part of the older ones and it should tell you the version that you used previously.
Since you uninstalled the original you need to install and not repair if the repair option does not appear.

Re: VirtualBox 3.0.6 fails to execute
Hi, tried that (I think) and still no luck. Version 2.2.0 fails to run just like version 3.
I have now tried to run virtual box on two more machines, another at work (XP) and the other at home (Vista). The XP machine at work had an older version (innotec) that had to be removed before installing version 3. This machine works OK.
The other PC (vista) has the same problem as before. VBoxSVC.exe and Virtualbox.exe processes are started but nothing happens. The Vista PC has never had virtualbox on it before.
Therefore I suppect some other driver / application / service is effecting virtualbox.
I can post all my running processes, but before doing that is there anything anyone can think of that causes this problem?

Re: VirtualBox 3.0.6 fails to execute
Just to quick post / update in case it helps anyone else.
The main culprit looks to be my Media Center USB / IR remote (Compro VideoMate K100). When this USB device is present the application fails to start (or gives that impression). If I remove this device then everything is OK. I can then reattach the device and the application continues to function as expected.
