Unable to boot VDI

Team,

OS X 10.6.1
VirtualBox 3.0.6

I was a VirtualBox user up until February 2009. I then switched to another product but am interested in coming back to VB again. I just installed VB 3.0.6

I took my XP.VDI image from February and copied it back secondary storage to primary storage, created a new VM, pointing it to the existing hard disk image. I copied the WinXP.VDI file to /Users/username/libarary/Virtualbox/HardDisks.

Upon powering on the VM, it immediately resets. I can barely discern some error message about NTDETECT. It seems as though it cannot read the .VDI image. My VBox.log file is attached.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Almost certainly the problem is caused by having a different hardware profile in the newly created VM. Ideally you will have the old machine xml file for reference. In particular you need to get the IDE disk controller type the same as before, or the result is a BSOD like you have seen. You should also make sure that the IO APIC setting is as it was before. You should also make the MAC address the same as before, otherwise you might be prompted to reactivate.

Incidentally: clone the VDI file before you start - do not do your experiments on your only copy of this VDI.
