I have ubuntu 9.04 and crunch bang linux (light weight ubuntu w/ openbox window manager) installed in virtual box 3.0.6 on my win xp machine. I have successfully installed guest additions in both linux distros- but I can't add a shared folder, nor have I been successful in getting my usb ports to work. On attempting to get the usb drives working, on a number of occasions, resulted in VBox crashing, and on one of those crashed I needed to reboot my pc to be able to open vbox again.

Your profile states that you are using the OSE version of VBox. That version does not support USB. You need to have the PUEL version.
As for the share, can you list the steps that you have done to try to make this work?
Also have you installed the guest additions?

I am using the PEUL version, and I did successfully install the guest additions, as I mentioned in my original post.

In vbox, I select a vm, click settings, scroll down the shared folder, click add folder- browse to the folder I want to share, and then I can't do anything. The "ok" button stays grayed out.

Also in settings, I scroll down to usb devices, fliters, add, and add every one that pops up- and check marked the box next to each one. I did that because they have useless names like "unknown device 0B97:7772 [0110]". I don't know what one is the card reader slot.

then, when I start the vm, I click on device, usb, etc.. and it crashes. All that and I never see any usb devices in my vm.

OK for the shared folder. You did pretty well but at the last when the OK button is grayed ot it is tell you that there is a problem. More than likely the share name. It can not contain spaces or any characters. use something like share and see if the ok button lights up for you. Then in the guest you will need to mount the share. Your profile says that the guest is a windows product so use this: to mount it and it will show as a network folder in the file manager.

Now the USB thing: Do not make any filters. Some of them are what is causing the crash. Only put a check mark in the USB enabled and the USB2. Then Only make a filter for things that you read and know are available. If it does not have a name you recognize it should not be used. Also do not make a filter for the keyboard or the mouse.

Awesome- thanks... that explains a lot. I guess I can blame Windows for having spaces in their directory names - "Local Settings", "My Documents", etc...

I'll make dedicated folders for that.

I'll try those options for the usb devices also.
