I am having problems setting up a brother hl-1240 printer. It is an USB printer attached to a Windows Vista machine. I am running VB 3.0.6 with a quest os of Windows 7- 90-day eval of Win 7 Enterpise. I tried the network setup wizard. The printer is set up but no output comes out. It is like there is no communication between the 2 printer drivers. Any ideas?

We need the actual network information to figure this out for you.
Guest settings for the network, MODE, is a router in the equation? That sort of thing.

As you can see it more than likely is the way that you have set up Vista. Plus Firewall must be set properly to allow this.
But once this is setup you should have no problem printing to the Host(Vista) printer.
I assume from the addressing that you are using that you have the guest set to Bridged mode. That is where it needs to be in case that is not what you have.
Also don't map the USB for the printer in the Guest settings. It rarely works properly even if you do manage to make it work.

Bridge mode allowed me to connect to the host machine.
I remove the printer driver and have re-installed. I am setting up the printer driver now.

printer works under Microsoft Virtural PC but not under VirturalBox.

The problem as I see it that Virtural Box assigns IP addresses in the 10. range. My network starts with 192.168.x.

Not if it is set to use Bridged mode.
NAT is the one that uses that address.
Look at the network settings of the guest and make sure that it is set to use bridged mode. It will then pick up the address from the DHCP of the router. Or you can assign it a static address but NAT will not work unless you forward specific ports.

If you have the network set to use Bridged mode then you should rerun the printer setup wizard again.
If it does not see it to start with then tell Win 7 that you do not see the printer and it will give you a box where you can enter the IP address of the Host.
Enter the IP address of the host click browse and then it will come to a section that you should be able to put your login name and password (Host login/Password). Enter them correctly and tell it to save your password.
It should save and you can print a test page from there to make sure it works.

I have decided to give up and use Microsoft VPC. I know that it works.

I tried your ideas with no luck.

I can ping the machine. I can share files but something is blocking the use of the printer.

Here is the response that I got from Brother:

Thank you for taking the time to write to us. The HL1240 does not support the network feature. This machine supports a direct connection using a Parallel or USB printer cable. We hope this information will be useful to you. If we can be of further assistance, please let us know.

I think they believe that you are trying to connect direct to the printer, but that should not be the case. What you should be doing is printer sharing in the host and then printing using the mapped shared printer in the guest. This works on LPT ports, serial ports,and even printing from Linux to Windows or Windows to Linux.

Honestly if you have it setup properly in Vista and use bridged mode (You have a router) it should be as simple as adding a network printer. I use this every day and set up Win7 to use my HP (USB) printer on my Vista Host. I know it is a little harder connecting from Win 7 but it is possible.

I realize this can be frustrating, but if you are still wanting to try I will help if I can. I went through the guest mapping again yesterday and sent you the process. What errors did you get?
