This sounds like a guest issue not a host issue.

I don't think that it is a Guest issue. While running VB 3.0.4 I installed Win 2008R2 x64 without any issue. I have recently upgraded to 3.0.6 and it no longer boots. It starts and gets past the starting windows portion but then hangs with a blank screen. I have tried sending a ACPI shutdown but it is also ignored all I can do is force a power down. The next time I try to boot it it indicates that it was shut down badly.
I have tried it with and without 3D acceleration.
Reinstalling 3.0.4 works.

That is odd. Maybe it is something to do with the guest additions.
I have installed R2 under 3.0.6 and it runs fine. Now running as a DC in a virtual network.

Is the host OS 64 bit? It has nothing to do with the Guest Additions, I have tried installing 64 bit versions of Win 2003/Win 2008/CentOS and they all hung just after boot under VirtualBox 3.0.6 on 32 bit Windows Vista.

Yes, Host OS is Win 7 Pro x64 with hardware virtualization. I have seen other posts about problems with 64-bit guests on 32-bit host OS and 3.0.6 .

I just saw the following on the 3.0.6 discussion thread:
Frank Mehnert wrote:This 64-bit on 32-bit host VBox 3.0.6 regression will be fixed in the upcoming 3.0.8 release.
So it sounds like there was an issue found with 64 bit guests on a 32 bit host. Hopefully the 3.0.8 will be out soon.

I have the same problem.
I have had some success by booting up the guest in safe mode and installing the guest additions ( including the network adapter) while in safe mode.
I then works 95 % of the time. I still get the occasional hang. I cannot say for sure, but I thing it may be a network issue.
I am running Windows Vista 64bit host on a Intel I7 machine, with a Windows Server 2003 R2 32bit guest for Sharepoint 2007 development.

No, you don't have the same problem. The problem being discussed is Server 2008 R2 which is a 64-bit OS.
It could be a problem with the driver for the network card on the host machine. Have you checked to see if a later version is available from the manufacturer?

hi,
I have installed Windows 2008 server 64bit(Guest) on Windows 7 host. Here Windows 2008 server works fine inside virtual box. But the problem is i could connect windows 7 from windows 2008 or from windows 2008 to windows 7. I used the bridged network and for the IP. But while pinging it throws error.
Please help on this

Don't wake the dead, this post is more than 2 years old, almost 3!
Also, 3.0.4 is a very old version onto which you will basically get no support. I strongly advice you to use the latest version first.
