Connecting USB device causes blue screen on host

Hello,
I just installed VirtualBox 3.0.6 on my Windows XP SP3 machine. I am trying to install a Windows 7 guest to use to eventually sync my MP3 player with (long story-- just don't want to clutter up the host and it was a good thing to experiment with).
The Windows 7 install went fine and the OS seems to work. However, whenever I try to create a filter to connect ANY USB device, it causes a BSOD on the host when I try to start the guest computer (or immediate BSOD if I try to create the filter while the guest OS is running). I've tried on the MP3 player, a generic flash drive, and a USB winmodem. It happens as soon as the guest machine gets "turned on", before the OS even boots or anything, so I'm guessing it's a driver bug in the USB driver included with 3.0.6.
I've used USB devices successfully with an older Virtualbox at work (I think it may be 3.0.0, not sure). I am going to try to downgrade but I've run into the guest-BSOD issues (on SATA drives) with 3.0.4 so I'm hoping not to be trading one problem for another. (not a slam on the app, which is great, but it just is a problem if I can't boot the guest but at least it wouldn't be as big of a problem to recover from)
Just basically asking if anyone else has had issues with USB support in 3.0.6?
(computer is an Asus P5WD2, Pentium D 940, VT enabled, 32-bit host/guest, 2GB RAM, 768MB assigned to guest)
Thanks for any tips.
