Re: Arg!!! Can GUEST (XP) give internet access to HOST (OSX)?
But don't you get the problem of VB assigning an IP to the Host-Only adapter? How did you solve that?

By using a different subnet and using dual_dhcp-dns server(freeware tool), an abfab tool. You can change the host only just like the fixed address in ics, it just disables the use of dhcp and dns and gateway which can be solved by using dualdd.

vbox4me2 wrote:Its not all that difficult, I just finished a slimline vm router with xp, again simple.
To skip some stages with a router, add a Host only network to the VM that is having internet, inside the VM enable ICS between the lan adapter that is created via the usb stick and the Host only network adapter, this becomes 192.168.0.1 with dhcp, the Host-host only adapter is (pre)fixed so you need to change that to dhcp, thats all basicly.
My thoughts exactly my friend, however, nothing's working for me.
Bum-mer!!!
I've done this a trillion times over the past 2 weeks and nothing!!!
Today, I was finally able to get the HOST OSX to ping the GUEST XP.
The NIC being shared was changed (by me to 192.168.56.1), I disabled windows firewall, (i was always able to ping osx from xp) and could successfully ping each other. SWEET!!! I left the pings running and then was distracted by co-workers. When I finally came back to it OSX couldn't ping XP anymore (I hadn't stopped the original pings) ...
I even toggled xp's firewall on/off several times but finally gave up after 3 or 4 hours of trying to get the 2 to ping each other. Oh! Forgot to mention....not only did osx stop being able to ping xp but XP CAN NO LONGER PING OSX for some in explicable reason!!!
NIC has been changed from host-only back to bridged upmteen times but still no go. XP's NIC = 192.168.56.1/255.255.255.0 and vboxtnet0 on OSX = 192.168.56.2 ...
Strange, huhn?

Re: Arg!!! Can GUEST (XP) give internet access to HOST (OSX)?
I didn't have to do anything. it was already there. you can change it if you want to. In OSX go to the menu bar ...VIRTUALBOX VM>>Preferences>>Network>>Sasquatch wrote:But don't you get the problem of VB assigning an IP to the Host-Only adapter? How did you solve that?
Here you'll see the adapter listed in the box...highlight it, then click on the little 'screwdriver' on the right side to open up the properties. There should be an IP and Subnet mask there already. [should be able to change it here] You can click on the DHCP tab then click on the 'Enable' if needed. (it was already done for me).
I 1st went to 'terminal' window and typed "ifconfig" to see if I could find out what it was...
Hope this helps.

Re: Arg!!! Can GUEST (XP) give internet access to HOST (OSX)?
Well, after 2 weeks of struggling through this I have exhausted every last nerve with this thing.
I'm going to re-install VB, create a new XP vm, and give it one more kick at the can.
If it doesn't work after that, then I'm DONE with VB for good. Too bad really, I had great expectations for sharing my life with VB.
I'm just sooooooooooooooooo frustrated and frankly can't afford the time that this thing costs me.

Sit down at the table, take some paper and a pen and write out in a schema how things should work, IP addresses and all, then take it to vbox adapter settings in host and guest, if you had internet on the host I'd do it for you with teamviewer, 10 minutes work at most.

Thanks much...
NEWS FLASH!!! They can ping each other again!!!
All of a sudden, on of the interfaces on the guest has an IP in the same scheme as the vboxnet0. I NEVER HAD AN IP BEFORE!!! I've been checking all IP's over and over!!!
So, the share IP that couldn't be pinged so I have removed it and am using the interface that I can ping. It's now being shared the internet with the wireless device, the two machines can ping each other but OSX still cannot surf. I have set it to host-only and bridged but no go. Don't have teamviewer but can install it. Is there an OSX version? Is there a logmein for OSX? I'm headed home now.
Will check your reply after I get to twins to fall asleep. Let me know.
Thanks!

Re: Arg!!! Can GUEST (XP) give internet access to HOST (OSX)?
vbox4me2,
I'm home, the babies are asleep already (both sick), and the wife has gone to night skool. I have some time before she comes back and wants to 'talk about her day'. I've installed Teamviewer on my OSX and ready to make a connection with you (eh! that doesn't sound right) so let me know.
The time is currently 8:15pm Eastern standard time. I'm in Ontario, Canada.
Post back if you see this and give me a time that you'd be able to meet up on this thing. I will then give you my Teamviewer info and work with you.
How's about 9:45EST tonight? Let me know bro!
Whatever it is, please let me know with a confirmation to my email (check your PM's for my email address). I have my iPod Touch so I can get your email as soon as you send it (if i'm not trying to soothe one of the babies back to sleep).Much thanks.
FYI, systems are both pinging each other but still no Internet for OSX.

Just so you don't stay up all night waiting vbox4me2 is in Rotterdam and is probably sleeping right now since it is 2am there.
He will contact you though I am sure but probably not tonight.

Re: Arg!!! Can GUEST (XP) give internet access to HOST (OSX)?
I give you both good luck. Using teamviewer on the Host, which doesn't have internet, seems tricky. But doing it from the Guest might actually work

Re: Arg!!! Can GUEST (XP) give internet access to HOST (OSX)?
I did say 'on the Host' or it won't work
but TV won't stay loaded if there's no internet connection so being able to run it from the Host means he's already solved the problem.
