ISCSI or NAS with Virtualbox

Post by dinster »

hi sir

i have 1 x Dell R200 server running Redhat Enterprise 5.3. Everything works fine with latest Virtualbox. Problem is the server doesnt come w/ RAID protection ie. only single HDD. In other words, if my HDD failed - all my VMs will be gone. We've an enterprise ISCSI host storage (QNAP TS-239 Pro) which is fitted with 2 x 1TB HDD configured as RAID 1. I love this QNAP as it supports "live" expansion - so future expansion doesnt require any shutdown.

question is, is it possible to have VM's image file ie. VDI file on this ISCSI target instead of my locall Dell R200 server HDD ? :?:

If the Host can access it you can store the VDI's on it, but you also stick in another drive on the Host and use a software raid.

hi sir

thanx for helping - does that mean the VDI file can be stored anywhere as long as the host can access it eg. external USB drive, NAS, SAN etc etc ?

the only difference would be the access speed eg. USB 2.0 = 480 Mbps, NAS = 1Gbps (assuming GBe), etc etc

am i right?
