I am trying to set up a virtual ubuntu server to act as proxy, clam AV and dansguardian ( internet filter) box to point users too
i have tried various network seettings on both the W2K3 host and the Ubuntu 9.04 guest, i have also tried ubuntuce ( supposedly integrated proxy and dg OS) as i must confess to being more comfortable in a GUI than a terminal. I am trying to set the proxy for LAN clients as 10.1.1.9 :8080 - the W2K3 host is 10.1.1.6 with another virtual Ip of 10.1.1.11 ( for our intranet)
with the Vb host virtual adapter set to 10.1.1.9 and the guest set to use that adapter without DHCP it seems to change the guest IP to 10.1.1.7 despite me setting it to static and assigning .9
can anyone offer some ideas on how to make this work?
Cheers

Re: network settings for linux proxy server
We're gonna need more info like what adapter is attached to what, VBox VM network type, where are the Guests(inside vbox?), etc...

Re: network settings for linux proxy server
I am trying to get the guest ubuntu CE to be the proxy and web filter for my network - my LAN IP is 10.1.1.9 as that'd what i'd prefer to tie in with existing servers. so the Host is a W2k3 server with the ubuntu CE guest ina Vb VM.
I have tried using NAT, the virtual adapter ( with this IP assigned on the host and also with it on the guest), also bridging a NIC to the virtual adapter - with the various settings i have tried - the best i can do is get the guest to access the web ( and it's filter is working) however no matter what settings i use i cannot get an external PC ( or the host server) browser with 10.1.1.9 8080 as the proxy setting to work - it comes up with a time out message. If i have the guest via DHCP i get the same result with the assigned IP and 8080 port.
I wonder if its a VB problem or an Ubuntu CE problem - all doco suggests that CE should be able to do this via the CE machine's IP and 8080 to use dansguardian then through its inbuilt proxy.
