32-bit versus 64-bit: best host & guests combination?

Post by mosocms »

Hi everbody! :D

I need to build the following scenario: a Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS Server host for VirtualBox with three Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS Servers as guests (DHCP, DNS primary and DNS secondary).

The host hardware is 64-bit so I can choose between:
  • 64-bit host + 64-bit guests
    64-bit host + 32-bit guests
    32-bit host + 32-bit guests
What do you think is the best option?

The factors are stability and performance.

Thanks for your help! 8)

don't use a 32-bit host, it really is pushing it to get reliable 64-bit guests on a 32-bit host, especially in 3.0.6 apparently.

64-on-64 is what i'd recommend, a 64-bit guest on a 64-bit host is faster than a 32-bit guest on a 64-bit host.

32-on-32 just seems pointless to me these days.
