Virtualised Physical XP - Mouse & Keyboard hang on keypress

Post by Darkshine »

Hey all,

I have a new Ubuntu 9.04 host with Virtualbox PUEL 3.0.6. I used the instructions listed here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=769883) to virtualize my XP installation. Now whenever I boot XP as a guest, the mouse moves around fine until I press a key on the keyboard (or the host key, or select 'send ctrl-alt-del' from the menu). The host is still fine, and I can still capture the mouse/keyboard within the guest, but no keys work and the mouse is frozen. Shutting down the guest via ACPI shutdown works fine.

Logs are attached. This machine still works fine when booted on its own, so I'm pretty sure the problem is due to the change between USB keyboards and the Virtual PS2 keyboards (this machine has no PS2 inputs). Why not just reinstall? Coz then I'd have to ring up the IT Department and persuade them to add my virtualised XP to AD (and they take a dim view of anything non-windows ;))

Thanks guys!

Okay fixed. Basically, the things that needed to install themselves weren't installing because I wasn't logged in. And I couldn't log in because it hadn't installed the keyboard drivers :D

Fix: USB pass-through the Keyboard. The guest will swallow it and your host key won't work, but don't worry. Log in, wait for it to install everything it needs to, and when it asks to restart say no. Shut down, remove the USB pass-through and boot again. Everything should work!

I'm having the same issue, but not the same fix :(

Can you please elaborate a little? I don't see anything happening even after I let it run for hours. What is that "keyboard pass-through" and how would I enable/disable it? I could login, because there wasn't any prompt for password and windows could install all sorts of drivers except that stupid "101/102 Standard Keyboard or Mouse Driver" that always has a yellow warning sign to it.

I'm using VBox 3.0.8 on XP service pack2 and running XP as guest.

How do you have your usb devices set up in the VirtualBox 'control panel' ? Do not add your usb devices but rather leave the USB device filters empty (with Enable USB Controller and Enable USB2.0 selected). I had the same problem, with losing mouse and keyboard until I cleared the filters.
