Host: Ubuntu 8.0.4 Hardy Heron
VirtualBox: v3.0.4 r50677
Guest: Windows XP (<- that's all i know)
USB: Kingston DataTraveler 2.0 USB Device - 512 Mb

i've tried mounting the USB on virtual box and it works..
when i click the usb icon in the Virtual Box, my usb has a checkbox beside it..
i know its mounted because it's not gray-ed out and it detects the name of my usb..
and the USB State is "captured"..

but when the Windows XP fully boots..it does not detect the usb
-no USB icon on My Computer
-no Found New Hardware
-no prompt
-no nothing..as if i didn't insert the USB

USB captured by VirtualBox..but Guest Windows XP does not detect USB

i've tried these but still the USB is not detected in Windows XP guest:
1. rebooting the Guest, as well as the host itself.
2. connecting - disconnecting USB while Guest is running.

please help!

Is the USB drive mounted in Ubuntu?

Sometimes when the Host has mounted a drive it takes precedence over the Guest system, I have a similar issue with my MP3 player, Amarok gets hold of it and XP can't see it until I quit Amarok and re-start VirtualBox.

Try safely removing the USB (un-mounting) in Linux before starting VirtualBox. It might be a case of trial and error until you work out the correct order.

Thanks for the reply..

i do not know if i have already done that but i will try again tomorrow..the computer is at the office..
what i am sure is that i have:
1. Unmounted the USB in Ubuntu while the Windows XP is running (vitrualbox)
2. then plug the USB again (this time the host:Ubuntu does not detect the USB) but XP still doesn't recognize the USB

i will try doing this before running the VirtualBox just like what you have said..
thanks for the advice Nick Elliot..

-feel free to post any other suggestions..i want to try as many solutions as possible just in case other don't work
