I wonder if this problem is only limited to Windows 7 x64 users.

It is hard to tell since I'm sure many things could break and exhibit the same problem.

Someone opened a ticket for a similar problem under XP x64. I think it might be due to x64 on x64 but like I said unless you have all the details, it's hard to say.

Running Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty" x64 2Core Guest on Windows 7 Professional x64 Build 7600 on Quad Core i5 w/VBox 3.08
Had not installed Guest Additions yet. Ran great until tried to update. Regrettably, I didn't see which kernel it was moving to.
System died and booted me to the Ubuntu lowlevel shell (NOT BASH).
Frustrated, I deleted the drive, but now, I'm reconsidering that decision and that's why I'm here.
Any thoughts?

Same problem here, running 7 x64 host and Vista x64 guest. If I enable two cores, it will crash during the boot with the guest screen fully corrupted. I might try it without the guest additions installed to see what happens.

My dev station is a Core2Quad 9550 running Windows7 x64 RTM with 8GB of ram.
Strange thing is that Win2008 R2 which uses same code base as Win7 runs fine without bluescreen and 4 cores enabled?
Windows XP also runs fine and I have Ubuntu all with using 4 cores without a problem.
It's only Vista and Win7 giving me random bluescreens and strange 100% usage inside the virtual machines.
I just reinstalled Win7 Pro using default settings that use 1 core and it seems to be stable for now.
No luck! got same problem reinstalling a copy of Win7 in Virtualbox. After a while get a black screen of corruption as someone else mentioned and all 4 cores go to 100% utilization.

Update: Okay latest 3.0.10 version seems to have fixed this.

My question isn't entirely related to the problem you're having, but the same setup is what i'm trying. x64 Guest on x64 Windows 7 host. Nothing fancy, 768mb ram to guest, 8gb default dynamic HDD.

My host (this PC i'm on) is running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Its an nForce 680i SLI motherboard from BFGTech, Core2 Duo E6600 (2.4ghz) CPU, 4gb 800mhz DDR2, and SLI nVidia 8800 GTS's.

I just reloaded my pc last night after purchasing Win7 Ultimate, previously was running Win Vista x64 ultimate. Everything is a fresh install.

When I installed VirtualBox fresh this morning, Version 3.0.8 r53138 from the website, I immediately created a new VM, selected Linux, and Ubuntu (64 bit). Upon powering up the VM, I am prompted with a message "VT-x/AMD-V hardware acceleration has been enabled, but is not operational. Your 64-bit guest will fail to detect a 64-bit CPU and will not be able to boot"

This was working in Vista Ultimate x64. I have UAC disabled entirely to eliminate possible admin issues on Win7. Thoughts? The bios on the motherboard has VT enabled and is as up-to-date as it will get, as they stopped releasing updates for it last October.

My Vb is 3.1.0, I cannot create a new VM using Win7 64bit config. The selection screen only support all 32bit windows selections(from win98 , 2000,2003,2008,2008 r2,vista,win 7).

and After I created a vm, it just can setup with one core(CpU: E7400);

Host: Win 7 Pro 64-bit, Core 2 Duo T6570, 8GB
Guest: Windows Server 2008 Standard 64-bit, 1GB

I've been running this guest for a while with 1 CPU. When I saw your post, I turned on the 2nd CPU and booted the guest up. It loaded a driver for the 2nd CPU. It seemed to be running fine. It said it needed a reboot - not sure if it was for the 2nd CPU driver or the system management console plug-in. So I did a reboot.

Uh-oh.... The VBox GUI process shot up to 100% CPU and the shutdown part of the reboot is still running after 10 minutes... 20 minutes...

Edit: OK... Well, W2K8R2 SP2 might've been in the mix somehow... Powered down, set to 1 CPU, finished installing SP2, shutdown, turned 2 CPUs on, restarted and all seems well. What are we looking for, again? Anything in particular?

I can't even assign more than one core because my guest will refuse to boot up. I'm just trying to boot a 32bit OS as well...I figure 32bit can support 2 cores correct?

You need to make sure that your CPU and bios support hardware virtualization and that it is enabled in the bios as VirtualBox requires this to be able to run 64-bit OSes.

There are no setting in Bios to change whether or not I have a 64-bit processor. I am on a Toshiba Satelite l455d-s5976.

That is not what Perry said. He said that hardware virtualization must be enabled in the BIOS. Without hardware virtualization enabled on the host machine you cannot install or run a 64-bit guest OS.
