openSUSE 11.1 Host 100% on SMP Windows 2k AS guest

Post by fr2000 »

I am using openSUSE 11.1 as Host with VB 3.0.6 with 8GB of Memory, AMD Phenom II 955 Quad Core.

Using Windows 2000 Advanced Server with all service packs as Guest. SMP on OS 11.1 Host shows 2 CPU's at 100% always switching around too two cores. If I run 2 AS guests...then I am at 100% on 4 Cores. It is really weird, yet Linux works fast...but my CPU Fans are flying off the handle because of the 100% racing condition is tripping them to keep it cool.

The performance on the Guests show 0% to 2% of both cores in Guest.

Yet while I am running Windows XP all service packs as a Guest at the same time it only uses between 3% and 6% at the same time. When I shut the AS guests off...then again my fans become quiet and the Windows XP guest goes back to the low %'s above...which is normal.

Really would like to know if there is someone who is having a similar problem. Is it a problem with Windows 2000 Advanced Server or VB 3.0.6?

Also One AS guest graphics work correctly at 16 and 32 bits all res...the other wont go past 640 x 480 x 8 bit with VB Additions added the same way for both during safe mode. Just one more wierd thing I hope can be fixed.

Any input would be great.

Checked further...it is only with SMP active VB Guests...also tried it with 3.0.4. Had a Windows XP SMP 2 Core Guest and it does the same thing as the Win 2k AS guests. Apparently this is only a SMP problem. Which I figure is related to the APIC-IO which is needed to use SMP guests. I tried 2 different computer on these one with 3.0.4 and one with 3.0.6.

Did more testing....Openfiler and openSUSE 11.1 guests with SMP do not race the CPU to 100%...Only Windows Guests using SMP and APIC-IO will cause each core to race to 100%. I hope there is a solution to this...because it causes my fans in my Computers to be very loud trying to cool then CPU's down.
