Can Someone Please Help With USB on VirtualBox?

Post by JDobbsy1987 »

Hi,

I am using VirtualBox 3.0.4 on Windows 7, I have put an XP Pro image on to the VirtualBox, everything seems to be running fine but i am having issues with USB on it.

When i right click on the USB icon on VirtualBox and then select the USB device that i want i get the attached error.

Can anyone help me with getting this to work?

Regards,
Jamie

A Blank Filter will allow almost everything to work but once you boot the guest you must unplug the device and plug it back in to allow the guest to get focus.
Or you can simply enable the USB/USB2 and leave the filters blank. Then once you have the guest booted go to the devices tab (located at the top left of the VBox window) and select the device from there.

Hi,

I am having the exact same problem. Same version on w7 host. Except I'm trying to add my usb wifi adapter. I am getting the exact same error message. I also tried using blank filter and still get the same message.

Did that work for you?

Thanks

Why are you trying to add your wifi adapter to the guest? Can't you connect to it through VBox like it is supposed to do?
The host has an actual adapter that you connect to the Internet with.
Then you select that in the network settings of VBox to use and select a virtual adapter for the guest to use.
This virtual adapter connects to the host adapter and the guest uses that to get to the Internet.

Yes I know. Sorry I didn't explain. I'm requiring exclusive use of the wifi adapter for my own personal security auditing. I've done it with vmware in the past on a backtrack guest without issue. Since I noticed someone else with the same error message on a storage device I thought it might be a virtualbox USB workaround of some sort.

I understand the purpose of the virtual host adapter is to create a segregated VLAN apart from your computers network hardware to isolate OS's in a "sandbox." In order to get internet on a guest you would use the internal NAT adapter or simply bridge the adapter to existing network hardware.

To explain deeper, I need exclusive use to support "monitor" mode on the USB wifi adapter. I can't do that with bridging or NATing.

Well that's different. USB is a little tricky with a Windows host, and compounding it by needing to use it for the wifi adapter is even a little harder.
First thing to do is to make sure that you use a blank filter in the USB section of the guest and nothing else.
If you are going to make exclusive use of this on the guest you should have it unplugged before you boot the guest.
Once booted then plug the adapter in and it should be picked up by the guest. Now Linux is a little different but Ubuntu usually is really good at picking up USB devices (at least 9.04 not sure about 8.10 its been a while).
The reason for it to be unplugged is so the host does not grab it first and then you have problems.

This could get tricky. The adapter actually plugs onto the USB jumpers on the motherboard and provides an antenna connector through the rear panel. Wondering if there's an alternative. I've tried disable/enable in device manager, no dice.

Sorry JDobbsy1987, didn't mean to hijack your thread. Did you get your USB device to work with the method Perryg mentioned?

I've the same problem, with 3.0.6 version and Device lock software (USB in white List).
After uninstall Device Lock and downgrade version 3.0.4
No problem
Réinstall Aditionnal tools and reboot Host after first connection USB device
Good Luck
