Unable to upgrade
Running Ubuntu 9.04. After getting the notice that VirtualBox 3.06 was available, I downloaded the .deb file and tried to run it. Got the error message that a previous version (2.2.2) was in conflict and therefore 3.06 could not be installed. I couldn't find any way to uninstall or remove 2.2.2 (apt-get remove didn't work because it wasn't installed with apt-get), so I manually deleted all the 2.2.2 files I could find. But I'm still getting the message and now of course, I can't run 2.2.2 either. There must be some easier way to upgrade VirtualBox from one major version to another without reinstalling Ubuntu.

Re: Unable to upgrade
I had this same issue running Ubuntu 8.10, I also used it to remove and re-install 3.0.4 in a Ubuntu 9.04 host. Close all VM's close virtualbox; then go to terminal and use - "sudo apt-get remove virtualbox-2.0" this did not work for me until I added "-2.0" onto virtualbox in the remove argument. apt then removed vbox-2.0 and I was then able to install the .deb package. Hope this helps.
