Neither keyboard nor mouse events are captured - can't login

Post by virtualboxaccount »

Hi,

I've used the last years Virtual PC but some colleagues recommended VirtualBox to me. I want to give VirtualBox I try but I'm failing at the first steps.

I'm using Windows XP as host and a Windows Server 2003 as guest OS. The problem is that when VB boots the guest OS and the login screen appears I've no possibility to enter a password due to not capturing any keyboard or mouse events. It can capture and release my mouse so that I can't use it any more in my host OS but the mouse does not move any pixels in the virtual box!? I could imagine that it has something to do with the guest addons, but as I can't boot my guest OS, I can't install the addons, can I!? (But I'm not sure if it has something to do with these addons, as keyboard events should captured without them!?)

Am I stupid or what I'm missing? This should be a really easy process and not a showstopper...

Is this a VM from elsewhere and not a new VM install? try via safemode.

It's a virtual machine created with Virtual PC.

I pressed F8 during booting the VM with VirtualBox and tried all three safemode (with(out) network/prompt) with the same results.

You probably need to remove the VPC additions before using it in VBox.
Make a copy after you remove the VPC additions and use it on VBox.
That way you can put the additions back in the VPC copy and use both if you want.
Be sure that you install the VBox guest additions in the VBox copy.

Be sure to compare the settings you are using and have the VBox copy match what you had in VPC.
