WinXP host, Linux guest -- local bridge networking setup

Hello,

I am using WinXP as my host OS and am running Linux (Suse) for the guest OSes. Can anyone advise me on how to configure Virtualbox for local bridge networking? I do not require other hosts to be able to connect to the guest, but I do require the guest to be able to connect out.

So, nothing in, only out? Then NAT is the best option. Set the Guest OS network settings to DHCP, VM settings attached to NAT. NIC type doesn't matter, Linux has the driver for all of them.

Thank you for your response. From the manual, I read that NAT is the default setting for VirtualBox, so I didn't monkey with those settings.

The DHCP client on the guest (Suse Linux) is getting back 10.0.2.15, which surprises me since the DHCP configuration on the host suggests that the address should be 192.168.56.101. Can someone tell me whether this is correct behavior or something in the dhcp client has gone wrong? I think it must have because I am unable to reach any ports off of the guest.

Again, read the manual, this time more carefully. 10.0.2.15 is from NAT, 192.168.56.x is Host-Only. Throwing the 10.0.2.15 address through Google with a site filter to this forum would get you plenty of information and results that it's NAT. It's even in the Manual, advanced topics (about changing the NAT DHCP range, which almost nobody uses anyway.
