[Solved] Why is my Windows XP shutdown always say ABORTED?
Hi ALl,
I am using 3.0.6 on my Macbook Pro w/ Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8. Recently I just reloaded my XP vm on VirtualBox. Every thing was going great until I went shutdown the vm. Now every time I shutdown my XP VM VirtualBox says ABORTED instead of POWERED OFF. Has any one else seen this before?
Thanks

Happens 99% of the shutdowns of XP VM.
Does not appear to affect start up of the VM.

I had this problem and switched to either using no sound adapter or to using the Legacy SB16 adapter. You will need to load the SB16 legacy drivers manually in XP, but I have not had a problem since.

Control Panel add new hardware. Follow the instructions but do not tell it to detect.
Tell it you will select the hardware. In there you will find the SB16 Legacy drivers.
You must have it selected in the VBox settings first.
You need to reboot for this to take effect.

Made the adjustments and have sound. One shutdown ending in Powered Off - unusual after all these months.
Cant say I would call this an obvious solution . Must have been lots of work to track down. And thank you for your effort and time.

Re: Why is my Windows XP shutdown always say ABORTED?
Thanks for posting this fix for WinXP VMs that show "Aborted" after shutdown. I also had been seeing this on a WinXP SP3 VM. I'm using VirtualBox 3.0.6 for this VM on a Mac OSX 10.5.8 iMac (2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo / 2 GB RAM).
I made the changes that you suggest with replacing audio with SoundBlaster 16 today. It seems to be working great -- now I get "Powered Off" when I shutdown the VM.
With this VM I have been having a heck of a time resolving a problem with VirtualBox hanging after Win XP Guest shutdown. This hang requires force quit of VirtualBox and restart of Mac to get VBox running again. See post (http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=19085) for more details and bug report link on this topic.
I mention this here because I'm now wondering if this audio change to SB16 will help with the VirtualBox hang after VM shutdown problem? I'll do some more testing on this and report it to the aforementioned thread.
So, thanks Perryg for the helpful advice -- I appreciate it!

Re: [Solved] Why is my Windows XP shutdown always say ABORTED?
It has been several days since applying the SB16 fix. In watching the 'caption sequence', the SB16 problem is fixed and I have now progressed to the next cause. <sigh>
I do need to clear out the crash reports that appears from time to time - I never recall the events leading up to.

So are you saying that you are still having problems with shutdown aborting or just crashing?ChipMcK wrote:It has been several days since applying the SB16 fix. In watching the 'caption sequence', the SB16 problem is fixed and I have now progressed to the next cause. <sigh>

Can you give me some more information and I will see if I can figure it out.
Since the switch of the sound seems to fix the first problem you probably should start a new topic where we can discuss your next issue.

Is is still shutdown results in aborted as the caption for the VM.
Unless you can suggest some traces or other diagnostics, there is no sense with new topic.
New topic if/when I have something other than my observations.

*****... was hoping this "fix" would do the trick, but still ends up as Aborted. I really hope Sun fix this problem in later versions, as it is extremely annoying.

Re: [Solved] Why is my Windows XP shutdown always say ABORTED?
Shut down aborts are really hard to find. I can tell you that it is more than likely an XP problem as I have not had this in any other OS. Somewhere it is hanging on a driver too long and then everything goes south. In the mean time try clicking on the machine tab at the top and the ACPI shutdown and see if it will shut down properly. Also since Microsoft has all but stopped supporting XP it may be even harder to actually locate and fix.

Opened a separate thread, because mine is tripped by activating and using USB devices - storage.
