Low VGA resolution with VB 3.0.6 (WinXP on Ubuntu 64)

Post by VirtualBrain »

Yesterday I updated VirtualBox from 3.0.4 to 3.0.6 (both closed source) on my Ubuntu 9.04 64bit machine (AMD). The Windows XP guest that worked fine before upgrading now has a very low VGA resolution and its not possible to change it in the display preferences of XP. Installing Guest additions 3.0.6 doesn't fix it either. When uninstalling the GA the guest finds no VGA drivers at all.

Additional info:
- only 1 core active
- ACPI on
- IO/apic off
- AMD-V on
- 3D acceleration off

Thanks in advance

Try installing the Guest additions again and watch for any errors. Also when upgrading you need to reboot the host as well.

Suddenly it works again.

I let the kernel module recompile via "/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup" and restarted everything. Normally VirtualBox does this by itself after an update (or warns me about it when I start VB, but it didn't). Of course I restarted the machine since yesterday.

Well, thanks for your ideas.

Nope, I think there's still a problem.
When using the option "Resize guest window automatically" (don't know the right english translation - the guest resolution is adapted to the host window size) then everythings fine first: full size works and other resolutions too. But when I restart the guest machine after using full screen resolution the VGA settings get very low. I have to resize the window so the resolution is adapted again to fix this thing. That should be done automatically I think.

Just for your information.
