Windows guest won't start (but does boot)

The guest is Windows XP from an OVF file that was exported from VMWare.
The host is Ubuntu 8.04
VirtualBox 3.0.4
It begins the startup sequence, I see the windows splash screen etc, then I see some white-on-blue writing that vanishes too fast for me to read and we are back to the VirtualBox splash screen. I presume I have some bad hardware config. I did have to trim down the required memory that was initially configured (from the OVF) and maybe I needed to change something else too. Trouble is I can't read the message to find out what. Does anyone have an approach to solving this?
Further info that may be relevant. I tried a CD install into another Virtual Machine of Windows 2000. The install goes okay and when Win2k actually boots something goes bad (again I can't see what) and it reboots. This is a different problem, I think. It looks a bit different. I'm not really interested in getting win2k running but it might be relevant to the first issue
Thanks
