Guest Windows SBS 2008 keeps crashing in Win 7 host

Hi,

I'm completelly noob to virtualization so please bear with me :)

I'm using Virtualbox 3.0.4 installed on a Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit computer, CPU is Intel E6550 that supports 64bit extensions.
For my studying I've decided to set up a virtual domain at home using Windows SBS 2008. My first install didn't finished, it BSOD on me. Upon reboot it got into the server but the SBS console was trashed, saying that installation did not complete sucessfully. I tryed reinstalling (formated) and I'm stuck with this problem. SBS installs ok until a certain point and BSOD's when the initial configuration wizard starts. Again upon reboot I get into the server but SBS console is non functional. thing is I managed to install the additions but it did not work. But the virtual server keeps crashing with apparently random errors (REGISTRY_ERROR, IRC_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, etc) it never gives the same error.
Thinking it had something to do with the network configuration I disabled network in VirtualBox settings and surprise. No more BSOD, but without network support it kinda defeats the purpose of setting up a virtual home domain to learn :)

The ISO image I believe is ok, works fine in VMWARE Workstation, But I prefer VirtualBox since it's free for private use.

So it points to a misconfiguration of the network. I've gonne through the manual I didn't change a thing (first try) in the network config (Intel NIC, bridged), since then I've also tryed Intel NIC (all 3 of them) with NAT. With all configurations the same thing happens, I get into the server, can access internet (at least until it crashes).

Shure hope this is one of those noob things I'm missing and I hope someone can give a hand. I'm attaching a log from VB. Any more info you need don't hesitate to ask.

Any ideas anyone?

Did you by chance remove VMware additions before you tried to use it in VBox?
I see a lot of errors in the log that make it look to me like they are still there.
The additions don't play well together.

Yep VMware fully uninstalled (to the best of my knowledge), run uninstall and confirmed no folders/files/registry entries left behind.

Any sugestions?

Maybe you should try to turn the RAM down a little The above is from you log file.
It show that you may be running into a problem with system memory.
Usually it is not recommended to use more than 50% of you available memory for the guest.

Quite right. I have 6GB and assigned 4 GB to SBS2008, which is the minimum requirement to run, so I can't see lowering the memory to be an option. Anyway, even with the virtual SBS runing I still have about 1GB of available memory to the host.

what bugs me (no pun intended) is that If I disable the network in settings SBS will not crash, but if I enable it it crashes in a few minutes after entering the system. Strange no?

any more ideas?

Well I want to suggest that the actual problem could be something that is caused by using Windows 7 as that host. I am not suggesting that it is in fact that Win7 is the problem. It is just that it is new and really not out to the general public as a complete OS. I for one have been using MS products since they fist hit the market and can tell you from my experience that there are always problems with the first release. Some of it is MS's fault and the other part is that vendors have not released specific drivers and finished their tuning to make it all come together. Since you have already tried all of the Intel adapters, I have to think that the above is an issue here.

As a side note, it may say the minimum requirement is 4 gigs of Ram but I have Windows server 2008 Ent. working in VBox with 512 meg of memory. I also know for a fact that if you run into memory issues everything from the NIC to the keyboard can be affected. Try lowering the memory a bit and see if it helps. If not then put it back.

thank you for the suggestions Perryg, although I'm not inclined to the memory configuration beeing the issue, you never know, so I'll give it a shot.

Win Server 2008 enterprise does have 512MB as minimum requirement, but SBS has de full 4GB as minimum.

I also browsed the support tickets and found some references to people having issues with Win7 (host) and Win Server 2008 (guest) when using 2 or more CPU's (I'm using 2 cores), So I'll also be trying to enable only one core with the network configuration enabled (bridge and Intel NIC). If that also fail what the heck, I'll give 3.0.6 beta a try :)

Hmm :9 I seem to be running Win SBS 2008 with 4GB has guest with network enabled on a Windows 7 Ultimate RTM x64. With only one core though, so performance is a little on the down side. could it be a problem with the implementation of SMP in 64bit hosts/clients? Acording to this, it seems to be somewhat generalized.

Let's wait for news.
