Fedora 11 guest very slow

Post by adrian.hodos »

I have installed Fedora 11 on latest Virtual Box version. The virtual machine is configured with 768 MB of ram , 64 MB video memory and 3D acceleration. Also I have installed the VBox guest additions for Linux , everything works ( dynamic resize , mouse integration , shared folders ). Still the guest machine is very sluggish ( it takes up to 15-20 minutes until it shows the login screen ). Also performance when running ( dragging windows / copying / moving files ) is poor. I have disabled most of the services that Fedora starts ( sendmail , updates ) but with no visible effect on performance. The Windows 7 and XP guests that I also run in VirtualBox work just fine. Could anyone give me some hints as to what can be done to improve F11's performance ?

My F11 is really fast. I have it set to use 256 Meg of RAM and 10 Meg of Vram.
I am not using the 3D effects though. Eye candy does not interest me, but I did have it turned on for a while and it did not slow down the performance that much.
If F11 is taking that long to boot it could be looking for something before it brings up the logon screen. Look at the hosts file and see if the local loop is in there.
Also tell us how much memory the host has, and watch the boot sequence and see where it hangs and let us know.

After much digging I have managed to solve the slow boot problem ( it takes about ~3 minutes now which is acceptable ). Much of the problem was related to udev hanging at floppy detection , which was solved by creating the file /etc/modprobe.d/floppy.conf and putting the line "blacklist floppy" in it. But I haven't solved the UI problem. It's still very sluggish. Any ideeas ?
