[SOLVED] Guest Winows isnt shutting down correctly

Hello all,
i have a little problem with my vbox. I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 as Host with the shipped package of Virtualbox (2.2.4). The Guestsystem is Win XP (SP3 i guess).
When shutting down Windows, it doesn't always work. Sometimes the title changes from "WinXP [running]" to "WinXP [stopping]" but no matter how long i wait, it wont stop. I just can read the message "Windows is shutting down" with the windows logo above. I really have to restart my host-system to get my pc and the box working again.
Killing the processes only hides the guest-window, to start the host again i have to restart my whole system at all...
Someone has an idea about that?
Thanks in advance
and sorry for my poor english, but i thought there are more english users out there than germans

Try shutting down the Windows guest by clicking the Machine tab at the top left of the window and then on ACPI shutdown.
I have this problem off and on and this approach always works for me.

Hi Perryg,
thanks for your help. Unfortunatly this doesnt solve the problem, nothing changed.
Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance
Daniel

What happens if you disable the sound in the guest before you start it. Then shut down. Does it shut down then?

Hm, yeah, that did the trick.
Do you know why?

I think it has to do with the ALSA driver but don't know how to fix it. It may be as simple as getting a different driver, but here again I am not sure. I have not had time to research it that far yet.

Its not the only problem with the sound-driver:
I'm currently not able to play any video file, mp3 works.
Maybe the current alsa snapshot is unstable... only using it because of the support for my Soundblaster X-Fi card...
I'm gonna try the new snapshot, maybe this helps.
Thanks so far
Daniel

I have been able to select the soundblaster 16 in the Win guest settings. You must install the device from control panel add new hardware, and do it manually as Windows will not find it by itself. After that you need to reboot and see if this helps.

I don't think the change to SB16 is a good idea. It's used for legacy OS only (DOS, Win9x).
Waza-ari, do you happen to have PulseAudio 0.9.14 installed and set it to 6 channels (5.1 surround)? If you do, then it's best to update your PulseAudio, as it's very likely that is your problem. I had the same issue, my VMs wouldn't shut down properly and I had to kill -9 them, because PA takes up your CPU when a VM starts and crash soon after, only to be spawned back. Because the connection VB had with PA was never normally closed, it hangs on that. You can update PA to 0.9.15 using this PPA:
Code: Select all

Hi Sasquatch,
it wasnt the version, but the upgrade gave me a hint...
While upgrading my daemon.conf was overwritten and everything worked. After testing this, i used my own config file again and i had the same problem than before. After some research i fount out, that i have to lower the sound-quality, and that was all!
Thank goes to you two for helping me.
Thanks and good bye
Daniel

I want to know what you had in your daemon.conf file. This is what I have in it and it runs without issues:
Code: Select all
; daemonize = no
; fail = yes
; allow-module-loading = yes
; allow-exit = yes
use-pid-file = yes
system-instance = yes
; enable-shm = yes
; shm-size-bytes = 0 # setting this 0 will use the system-default, usually 64 MiB
; lock-memory = no
no-cpu-limit = yes
; high-priority = yes
; nice-level = -11
; realtime-scheduling = no
; realtime-priority = 5
; exit-idle-time = 20
; module-idle-time = 20
; scache-idle-time = 20
; dl-search-path = (depends on architecture)
; load-default-script-file = yes
; default-script-file =
; log-target = auto
; log-level = notice
; log-meta = no
; log-time = no
; log-backtrace = 0
resample-method = speex-float-1
; enable-remixing = no
; enable-lfe-remixing = yes
flat-volumes = no
; rlimit-fsize = -1
; rlimit-data = -1
; rlimit-stack = -1
; rlimit-core = -1

default-sample-rate = 48000
default-sample-channels = 6

default-fragment-size-msec = 25

Hi,
i just changed
resample-method = src-sinc-high-quality
to
resample-method = src-sinc-medium-quality
you dont have this setting at all in your config, give it a try...

Mine says speex-float-1. It's right above flat volumes, below the log parts.

I don't have a problem anymore since I upgraded to 0.9.15. You are still running that version, aren't you? Do you notice any high CPU usage when you open pavucontrol or start the VM (or when it's running)? If so, check if it's from PA and update if is, you really should update.
