Hi,
How should an static ip be given to a guest while the ip does not belong to any private network and there is no intention for communication between guest and host, the purpose is to let guest use that ip so as to connect to the net and the guest should be available through that ip from the net.
How the should the network config be in this scenario?
Static Internet belonging valid ip on the guest

Re: Static Internet belonging valid ip on the guest
You will treat the Guest as if it was the Host. If you have a USB modem, you hook it up through USB. If you have an ADSL ethernet modem or similar, you hook it up through Bridged. Dial-up can't be set to the Guest unless it's a USB modem, but that doesn't happen often.
Now, for the bridged ethernet ADSL. You have to disable TCP/IP on the Host, or at least enter a private IP on the bridged adapter, so that one doesn't get an IP from your provider. Doing that should be enough, if the ethernet modem connects on it's own.

Re: Static Internet belonging valid ip on the guest
This way the bridged adapter will connect to net through the main ip assigned to the host I guess. Imagine that there are 3 IPs available and the host is using the primary one, each guest should be given seperate IPs with network available to the host as well. Something actually like Xen in production environments or other Virtualization solutions that power production servers and vps boxes ultimately.Sasquatch wrote:You will treat the Guest as if it was the Host. Re: Static Internet belonging valid ip on the guest
Ah, well, with Bridged, the VM will be like any other machine on the physical network, so you set it like the Host, with the IP address you want the Guest to have. If you want to be sure that the Guest and Host don't go over the internet to access each other, you can use Host-Only as additional NIC.

Re: Static Internet belonging valid ip on the guest
Thanks a lot this is working now, what is the best alternative if one is not using the bridged mode. Perhaps because of the open source version. Do you find this correct:

Re: Static Internet belonging valid ip on the guest
That howto is ancient history, it's no longer used. What you linked to, is the old Host Interface (bridged) method, now deprecated.
What 'alternative' are you talking about? For internet access? Host-Guest access? Both?

Re: Static Internet belonging valid ip on the guest
Internet access only, I guess the OSE still lacks bridge.

Re: Static Internet belonging valid ip on the guest
The OSE has bridged, just like the PUEL version. It only depends on which version your distro gives you. Check the Editions page on the main website for a clear difference between the OSE and PUEL version. If you just want internet access, use NAT.

Re: Static Internet belonging valid ip on the guest
Is it possible to use the virtualbox dhcp in order to assign static valid ip to guests? This would be an alternative to go inside every VM and configure the network there, the reason is if the VMs are not trusted they may change their networking setting and make conflicts if they use another VMs ip address; assigning the IP from outside to the VM should fix this.
I also have seen while using the bridged the traffic towards a VM cannot be blocked by the host iptables and I guess this should not let anyone do any MAC Address filtering if that's gonna be another solution.
