[Solved] How to setup home network in guess OS?

Hi,

I am using VB 3.0.4. I would like to setup a guess OS which is running WindowsXP, have connection to Internet and also have access to local shared folders. I am able to do that for Linux, but failed in Windows.

In windows, if I attached network adapter to NAT, I am only able to connect to Internet. If I attached to Bridge Network, I do not have Internet connection and even can't ping the guess OS IP address from destiny PC?

But I am able to do that in Linux if I attached it to Bridge Network where I have Windows install as guess OS and even able to setup VNC inside the guess to remote other PC.

Does anyone experience this before? I have been search the Net, all are concern abort hosting a Windows and using Linux as guess or vice versa. Any guidance and pointer is much appreciated.

THanks @!

In bridge mode the Guest is like another PC on your LAN, thus your router must assign it its address stuff or set it static.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I do know that bridge mode will make the Guest act like another PC on the LAN, but what IP should I set in DNS?

Before I do that, do I really need to set static IP in Guest OS? Because when I set to NAT mode, I can have access into Internet, but if I set to Bridge mode, I have no access to Internet. I can't even ping a website like www.virtualbox.org. It shows me "Request time out."

I was wondering why in bridge mode Guest will have no Internet connection? But if I do that in Linux, I can have Internet connection. Is there any extra setting need to be done WindowsXP Guest/Host?

THanks @!

In NAT mode, the VBox Host becomes a router and dhcp server for the Guest, in Bridge mode your own real router does routing and dhcp.

If your own real router does not supply dns/gateway values its misconfigured.

You may want to check the firewall setup on your host and guess system.

I have been fighting this problem today. When I switched to "bridge" mode, the guest systems (Fedora FC11 and W2K3) were not able to access the Internet. After some network traffic and log tracing, I found that the problem lies in the Zonealarm firewall running on the XP SP3 hosting system. It all works fine once I changed the "Internet Zone Security" from high to medium. The Zonealarm log shows logs of denied traffic before the change. Internet surfing on all systems is no longer a problem. The systems could ping each others. I could "yum" new sofware on the FC11 machine.

Now of course, you need to assess if it's secure for you to change the security setting.

Hope this helps.

Hi guys, I got my problem solved.

Thanks to VB3009 on reminding me on the ZoneAlarm settings which is installed in host. I have to create a trusted ip for the virtual machine in ZoneAlarm. Now I have Internet connection and accessibility to the share folder in between the Guest OS and the destiny PC. And also thanks to vbox4me2 on providing related link on this issue.

Have a nice day!!
