And that's why you need to test it :). You can then restore that image onto a virtual hard drive by booting CZ in VB again.

Well it turns out I have 28KB of bad sectors on the drive (in one partition) which I hadn't noticed. XP NTFS had correctly spotted the bad sectors and marked them out of use and so no file data was in a bad sector so I'd never seen a problem in normal use and even CHKDSK /F /R would pass. Seagate Diagnostics tells me I have enough spare sectors for it to substitute so that should give me a clean drive again but I think I'll make another backup (in file not block mode) just to be on the safe side before I let it go ahead!

Ok after sorting out the drive problems, the "Repair Installation" worked perfectly and I now have the old PC running virtually.
