Query Guest OS state from host OS

Post by adumont »

Hi,

Is there any way to query, from the host OS, the state of the guest OS in a Virtualbox VM? Obviously, it may depend on the meaning of "state of the guest OS" would mean for anyone.

Actually I'm thinking of some kind of "OS heartbeat", much like vmtools does: from a vmware host, you can know is the guest is running the vmtools (giving much of an idea that the guest has finished it's startup and is running.

Is there anything like this (command or some kind of API) with Virtualbox addition (or without them)? If it's the case I'd appreciate you point me to some link where I can have more information.

Thanks in advance,
Alex
