Strange Networking Issues (Win <--> Win)

Hello -
I have a problem which is driving me insane. Please help if you can!
I have a Windows 7 RTM host trying to run a Windows XP guest. The primary purpose is so I can run Apache and Cold Fusion on the XP guest to emulate an application server environment for development on the Windows 7 host on my own small network. The host computer was able to get to shares on other computers before VB (3.0.4) was installed. Now, I cannot get to shares or attach to the other computers via Remote Desktop. I have disabled the VB adapter on the Win7 computer and unchecked the Virtual Box host from the network cards on the Win7 computer. This still does not resolve it. I have tried various network configurations on the VM's settings and it makes no difference. The host cannot see other computers -- but, it can see the VM when I use Bridged Adapter (and vice-versa -- but, the VM cannot see the other computers or attach to them).
I switched to the Intel T network adapter as suggested in some other posts. This made no difference.
My hopes are just to run the Apache/Cold Fusion server in the VM and be able to reach it on the host OS, and it would be really nice if I could get to it on other computers - but, not a necessity. I also want to see/connect to the other shares without VB's involvement at all -- but, short of doing an uninstall I am not sure how to fix this. It did all kinda work (I believe) until I went from 3.0.2 to *.04 version.
Anyone with any ideas??
Thanks!
Chris

Chris,
Do you have a router? If so you need to be using Bridged mode and look for a firewall issue if you have problems with access.
Also look at the ip addresses. Use ipconfig /all in the guests and the host. Post information here and we will see what might be causing the problem.

Thanks for any help ... Something just changed here which I cannot understand how the entire routing changed. I have not modified IP #s, etc.

It appears that you host only adapter in VBox is using the same address scheme that your actual network is using. Try going into the preference and change it to something else like 192.168.0 1 and see if this helps. You will need to reboot the guest and the host after the change but it should all come together after that. Let me know if this does or does not help, but since you have a router you should not be having a problem at all.

Hello --
This did not solve the problem - but, there is some progress. I also forgot to note that all Firewalls are turned off (I guess one should not publicise such things) ...
The Virtual Host adapter reads now as:
Code: Select all
Ethernet adapter VirtualBox Host-Only Network:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 08-00-27-00-5C-88
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::4958:3260:4a00:b3b%14(Preferred)
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.122(Preferred)
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
DHCPv6 IAID . . . . . . . . . . . : 453509159
DHCPv6 Client DUID. . . . . . . . : 00-01-00-01-12-09-90-A5-00-15-C5-B4-7F-
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 4.2.2.6
4.2.2.5
NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled
I rebooted all computers and guests and the router. Now, here is the strange thing. The host laptop (CHILKOOT) can see the guest (CHICKALOON). The laptop (in Windows 7) cannot get to the other computer (SITKA) but can get to it's own guest via the network shares. SITKA computer can see/access both host and guest on the laptop (all three). The guest can reach all three. The problem is the laptop (CHILKOOT) cannot reach SITKA -- but, it can reach the VB guest. I am using the same network credentials on all 3 machines. It can "browse/see" all 3 computers -- but, if you try to reach it, Windows reports that the network share (SITKA) is not available.
Again, the laptop was able to reach all shares before I installed VB. Any ideas?? Thanks for all the help.
Thanks,
Chris

You do have a router right? It appears that the host only sees the VBox host only adapter.
It is really late here tonight and I will pick this up tomorrow am but look at the host.
It needs to be using the actual network that you have and should show that and not just the host only adapter.
You may need to run the VBox install again and tell it to repair the install to see if it can fix the network adapters.

No worries, friend. I can live with the existing setup -- the VB install must have changed something in the adapters. As long as the guest <--> host can talk to each other, then I can demo the web applications I develop.
Thanks!

Hello --
I was able to solve the strange network problems I have been having since the 3.0.4 upgrade. I was tweaking some network settings via IPCONFIG /ALL and noticed the ISATAP adapters linked to each adapter including the VB driver. I entered NETSH and did the following:
Code: Select all
C:\>netsh
netsh>interface
netsh interface>isatap
netsh interface isatap>set state disabled
Ok.
netsh interface isatap>bye
Once I disabled this adapter, I was able to see all shares on the Host (with or without VB running - this changed the network routing somehow).
Thanks again ...
