Did they actually have broadband then, i thought they still used semaphore.
Seriously though. Is there a network manager in the windows OS if so does it show any thing other than dial up. if not you may be out of luck as i am pretty sure 3.1 is no longer supported.

Wasn't internet access done with winsock? I know those old braincells are somewhere around here....

There was a winsock driver (called trumpet) that was needed to use the Internet when it first started for DOS (which Windows 3.1 was). It was a TSR program that you installed. Whether or not you can still find that driver is another question.
Edit: Look what I found!

Hi, thanks for replies.
I follow the instructions here :
http://forum.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1037
And I always get the same Trumpet error message when I try to use an app which must connect to Internet :
Unable to load TCP - No packet driver loaded:
not found, or not winpkt/pktmux
Thanks by advance

Hi Chris, if this is still of some use: check out the packet driver or how to install it - from the source you quote or the earlier one:

Whats the difference between broadband and 56k modem? I'm buying a laptop but I need a fast internet for job communication. I know broadband is supposed to be fast, but is a 56k modem fast too? I have a 56k modem in this pc I use at home on dial up, but I when I connect it says 19.2kbps, it never gets higher. If a laptop comes with a 56k modem does that mean It will be double time than dial up at home?

Broadband usually runs around 10x faster then your 56k modem. 56k is just so 1980's

If you want to get on the internet - Windows 3.1 style, I recommend that you use Windows NT 3.51 Workstation, which is better than Windows for Workgroups 3.1x. Windows for Workgroups 3.1x has limited networking support.
There was a packet driver called Trumpet that allowed networking to work under Windows 3.1 and Windows 3.11, but it was shareware and it stops functioning within 30 days. In short, networking is not supported under Windows 3.1.

Trumpet is the only driver that works with Windows 3.1x and it's the only Winsock that is shareware. People must either pay money in order to keep using the Winsock under Windows 3.1x, or the internet connection will stop working.

Not true; for 3.11 you can also use MS own TCPIP stack (see e.g. here for details:
