[Solved] Installing Virtualbox on xubuntu

Post by turtleman »

G'day,

I am trying to install Virtualbox with great difficulty. The kernel fails to compile, and the log looks like this:

** Compiling vboxdrv
Attempting to install using DKMS

Creating symlink /var/lib/dkms/vboxdrv/3.0.4/source ->
/usr/src/vboxdrv-3.0.4

DKMS: add Completed.

Error! Your kernel source for kernel 2.6.30-02063003-generic cannot be found at
/lib/modules/2.6.30-02063003-generic/build or /lib/modules/2.6.30-02063003-generic/source.
You can use the --kernelsourcedir option to tell DKMS where it's located.
Failed to install using DKMS, attempting to install without
Makefile:147: *** Error: unable to find the sources of your current Linux kernel. Specify KERN_DIR=<directory> and run Make again. Stop.

so I did a search on my machine and found what appears to be the kernel source code in /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.30-02063003-generic. So I did the following:

dkms --kernelsourcedir /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.30-02063003-generic

Tried the install again and same verdict. Typing:

echo $KERNEL_DIR returns nothing.

Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

You installed a new kernel using this site, right? http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/ma ... v2.6.30.3/
If that's the case, grab the headers from there, install them and you should be good to go. Don't forget to install the build-essential package so you have the right compilers.

Yes thats where I got the kernel from. I have also installed the source.

I have since uninstalled the headers and gone to re-install them to see if this would solve this problem, however now I cannot re-install them for some reason. The Error I get (when running the .deb) is:

Error: dependency is not satisfiable: linux-headers-2.6.30-02063003

There is one package with the kernel itself, the image. There are two other packages for the headers, as you can see. Grab them both, then in the folder where you only have the two files execute sudo dpkg -i *.deb and it will install the packages without issues. You could have figured this out yourself, because you see more than one header package there that need to be used (headers amd64, headers i386 and headers-all, where you need headers-all before you can install either the amd64 or the i386 package). The error states it all...

You will VB in the menu. If you don't see it under System, log out and back in. You need to do that anyway, because you need to be a member of the vboxusers group, and that change is only reflected if you log out and back in. See the VirtualBox FAQ for the command to add yourself to the group. It can be done graphically too though.

Now, Linux is case sensitive, and starting VB from the terminal or other means require that you use the right name for it. It's VirtualBox.
