Hello All, So Im not a Pro at using Virtual Box, please bare with me... I'll try and provide all the nessecary information... Do you Need my system specs?

Im running Windows 7 64bit build 7100 -> Virtual Box 2.1.4 32bit -> FreeBSD 7.1-R 32bit -> gnome2/kde3.5/kde4.1.

I have not ran the bsd/X11 command "Xorg -configure", I was just letting X11/twm/gnome2/kde3.5/kde4.1 auto detect everything, so I enabled 3d acceleration in the Virtual Box settings, and went into kde4.1 enabled the effects with OpenGL as the renderer with no results, When I changed it to XRender it started producing the effects, like translucent windows when you drag them, etc. its runs a little slow because I only have Virtual Box reserving 512Mb of ram and 64Mb of Video Ram. But it worked!

Problem 1: Is it will not let me change it back to OpenGL now.

Problem 2: I wanted to try and get compiz-fusion working on gnome2/kde3.5, but you need to edit the xorg.conf, so I ran "Xorg -configure" and all I get is a black panel with nothing else, it just dies, no hdd/cpu activity at all, after a reboot, no xorg.conf exists in "/root/" or "/etc/X11/" What's wrong and how do I fix it??

CPU: Core 2 Duo Wolfdale E8400
BOARD: Asus P5K Premium
RAM: 2x2GB OCZ DDR2 1000Mhz @ 800Mhz
GRAPHICS: RadeonHD 4850 512MB
HDD: 250GB Seagate + WD 1TB
CASE/PS: Antec Sonata III /w Antec 500W PS

I'm no BSD pro, but KDE effects will not work, that's currently a bug that's being worked on. KDE is expecting something, or doing something that isn't the same as the Gnome/Compiz-Fusion implementation. For an xorg.conf example, check my howto in my signature. I have no idea if BSD uses the same kind of context, so it's best to compare it with your own file and adjust a few things where needed, the most important is the driver for video and mouse.

But kde4.1 effects are working, slowly/laggy but they are...

my problem is i can't generate an xorg.conf so that I can start messing with compiz-fusion under gnome2/kde3.5....
I dont' need an xorg.conf example i can get that off my other system... i have bsd7.1-R/kde3.5/compiz-fusion working on my server... under an onboard intel card.... I have no idea what driver virtual box is using to get kde4.1 effects working.. because it ain't the RadeonHD or Radeon Driver, because they have no 3d support yet....

My mouse works fine. Also how can i make any/all of the GUI's boot at a lower resolution then 1280x1024 because when i go into settings it only has that, no other options, (its using my windows desktop resolution for any of the window managers I use)... that I can change by adding the resolution to the screen section correct? which is a little different then im used to

Radeon driver no 3D support? Where did you get that? I have Linux on my laptop and I'm forced to use the Radeon driver, have Compiz-Fusion running smoothly on it. Maybe it's just some *BSD thing. And no idea what driver VB uses? Hello, did you check the example I gave you, or read the manual? They have their OWN video card with their OWN driver.

For your own reference, create the same set up on a Linux VM as you have with your *BSD VM. Maybe then you will see what is going on. As I stated, I'm no *BSD pro, never used it either. I know that Linux and *BSD are quite different, and that may as well be the reason why you're having problems.

I have been working on ver 7.2 for a while and have gotten most everything working but the auto resize is not functional (as expected) and since the video portion is not working as it should the effects do not either.

I will try to copy my xorg.conf later today and send it to you but it may be a little different than what you need since mine is a slightly newer version.

Edit: By the way this is a valuable piece of information when dealing with BSD, and in case you do not have it http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en/books/handbook/

Yes that is what I said, FreeBSD does not have 3d support for ANY radeon card above an R300 (for now....hopefully soon thanks to ati)

Yes I see that it uses a special VB driver now, i had responded before looking at your other thread.....no need for "Hello" in a sarcastic manor...

I'll pass on installing linux, i've tried it and prefer bsd, i've also tried freespire & ubuntu, and still prefer bsd.

why do some of the 3d effects in kde4.1 work then?? im confused. I'll post a screen shot in a second.... ok it won't let me take a screen shot while draging a window how would i record and save as avi or soemthingsimilar
