Sabrent TV USB

Post by erich_18 »

Hello,

Host OS: Windows XP 64bits SP2
Guest OS: Windows XP 32 bits sp3

I purchased a sabrent tv usb unfortunately only works on winxp or vista 32bits so i tried installing windows 32bits on virtualbox, I installed everything ok, its reads the usb device with out any problems, but everytime time i open windvr i get an error message that reads:

"Overlay is not available. Please close application and lower resolution, color depth and/or refresh rate for better performance" after i select OK then I just get a blank screen in windvr.

after the first time I got that message I increased the ram from 512 to 1gb and the video ram from 12 mb to 128mb, did not work.

then I selected an option in the display properties that reads: "enable 3d acceleration", did not work either.

tried toying around with the screen size and refresh rate to no avail.

I have the latest version of VB (downloaded it and installed it today).

any ideas? or is this something that just wont work ?

pc specs:
Intel Pentium D @ 2.8ghz (does not support HV)
Ram: 6gb
HDD: 320gb sata II
vid: Nvidia 8600
monitor: LCD 22" Wide. (1680x1050)

thanks

If not istalled Guest Additions: Install them.

If installed: Forget it. A VM is not made for running hardware not running on the host. The VGA is not the real hardware.

And since this is an XP guest, if you are enabling 3D acceleration, make you you boot in safe mode when installing the guest additions.

Have you checked google properly for your USB TV tuner? I browsed it a bit and found a few things that might be helpful. Check http://www.linuxtv.org/ for supported devices. If yours isn't in it, then it's not (yet) supported. There are already a few topics on other forums about the brand of your tuner.

Now for the VM part. Overlay is done on Windows by using DirectX. There is support for it since 3.0.0, but as dmcgraw said, install the GA and enabled 3D in the installer from safe mode. System files that are replaced during installation could be restored as soon as the system discovers it. Not all DirectX features, as well as the OpenGL features, are supported in VB, so keep that in mind. Some things work, but I haven't found out if Overlay works.

If this all fails, I suggest you return the piece of hardware to the shop, stating that it doesn't work on Linux and you want to look for one that does work properly. If they have some computers there, bring a live CD of Mythbuntu and test the hardware in the shop, if they allow you.

Look above. He has a 64 Bit Win XP. There are not much drivers for this OS.

Ah, missed that part. I check new topics through the unread posts link, and don't really check which section I'm in after opening a topic.

The device itself is installed properly? If that's the case, you might want to use a different program that doesn't require overlay. Media Player Classic can open devices like webcams, maybe it works for your tv tuner too.
