[Solved] Server 2008R2 Ent Networking problems after upgrade

Post by bassjace »

HI, I have just performed an in place upgrade from Server 2008 Ent SP2 to Server 2008 Ent R2, this is the RTM version. All worked fine except I now get an error message in the virtualbox interface in red telling me Invalid settings detected. This is refering to the Network settings page in particular - the Bridged Adapter. A connection is not being made with the NIC on the host machine. I have 2 physical NIC's and neither are being displayed in the virtualbox network section. Adapter 1 is checked and you can choose the adapter type, attached to but there is no adapter to choose in the name section where before the upgrade there was the 2 physical NIC's.
The guest OS which is Server 2008 SP2, a DC will only boot if the checkbox to enable network adapter is unchecked and the virtual NIC is disabled.
I have done a repair install of the virtualbox install and this has not helped.
Do I need to export the VM's and VDI's and then delete the install and reinstall and import the VM's and VDI's again?
Any thoughts on this working?

Thanks in advance.
cheers

You could try that, but it would be better to remove all VM's settings and start from scratch, the VDI's are seperate anyway and can be attached again, do keep the same MAC values.

Sounds like the upgrade zapped the VBox network drivers running on the host.

I would recommend a different approach to fixing this. First back up the host partition using something like Ghost or Acronis - if any of the following gets you into trouble you can restore this to fix the problem. Then simply uninstall VBox then reinstall. The uninstall leaves all your VMs intact, they'll still be there after the reinstall.

thanks for ther replies.

the uninstall and reinstall fixed the issue. It was the upgrade that "zapped" the host drivers and the install cycle fixed it.

I am surprised a repair did not pick it up but non the less it has fixed the problem and my VM's are all running again.

I would like to say that depsite Microsofts efforts with Hyper-V and R2 it still does not come close to the features and speed of VirtualBox. Live Migration aside virtualbox hands down is the most responsive.

cheers and keep up the good work
