Hi,
I have a Vista home premium 64 bit with 6gig Ram and I want to install a XP 32bit guest. The setup freezes with 33 minutes remaining. I found this on the web: http://techtracer.com/2007/03/12/xp-ins ... te-hiccup/ but that refers to a "normal" installation. Is the described valid for the virtual installation, too?
If I reboot and resume the installation it asks for service pack 2 files. I give the path for the dvd rom with the actual cd in it, but nothing happens???
*confused* What is the problem?
Thank you.
It is an actual, original Windows cd which already includes SP2. I clicked around a bit and found an Option about the CD Rom where I could tell the vm to use not a mounted file (which was activated) but the hosts Drive (I activated that and that 'passthrough' option). Then I reset the XP System and started the repair option, which is working right now.
Ok, it seems to be working now, installation is in progress. Now I'm wondering: If the host drive wasn't activated before, how did the installation get that far in the firs place. Sorry if all that was just plain stupid. It's both my first time with Vista and with VM, so apparently I was just a little too confused...
I'll keep you posted if I run into new problems or if it should be working, which it apparently does. Thanks so far.
Well, sorry to bother you again, but XP is asking for a password I never set... I feel completely stupid now...
And I've tried "blank"
Ok I just reinstalled and apparently did everything right this time. Everything seems to be working fine, even though it took me some time to get the USB Filters right. Thank you very much so far, everything seems to be working.

How did you deal with the original lockup? You didn't do anything like terminate the VBox process did you? Or force a hard reboot of the host? Anything else should have left the CD mounted...
Unless... oh right. There's an option in the "General|Advanced" settings tab for VBox to remember runtime mounted removable media changes between VM sessions. This is checked by default. If you unchecked it then you possibly forgot to mount the CD again for the restart (at this point the setup program would be running off the HDD, only needing the CD for cab files).
On the problem of the key: I suspect this install is hosed. If I were you I would start again, but this time I'd make an ISO image of the CD and install from that. That way there's no danger of your Vista host interfering in the process. If you don't already have a good tool for making ISO images I would recommend the freeware tool "ImgBurn" (google for it).
I reinstalled everything and it's working fine now. I must have done something wrong...
On the new install I had some problems with the USB filter when XP first tried to install the new hardware the guest froze, but after a restart it was working fine.
Thank you very much for the help.
I don't think I did a reebot, at least not a forced one. At least I'm absolutely sure I didn't change any advanced settings...
