I'm new to VBox and not very IT savy. Thought I'd get that right out front.
I'm trying to set up 2 network adapters on my WindowsXP guest. One for the Wireless card connection on my WindowsXP host and the other for the LAN (wired) connection. I have Adapter 1 configured for Intel Pro/1000 MT Desktop and it's attached to NAT. This works. When I disable to wireless on the Host I lose the connection on the Guest.
So my question is, how do I set up Adapter2 to use the LAN (wired) connection? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Exactly the same as the primary one, in the Guest it will show as 2 the same adapters.

With NAT, if the route or DNS server changes on the Host, that change is not reflected back at the Guest.
If you want to be able to use both interfaces, wireless and wired, in the Guest, you can configure two interfaces for the Guest, both attached to Bridged. One to the wired, the other to the wireless interface. Now, whenever you change connection on the Host, all you have to do is change the same thing on the Guest. Either unplug the virtual cable for the interface that's not in use, or disable it in the OS itself.

Thanks for the reply, but this actually locked up my machine to the point where I had to hold in the power button just to be able to restart.

As for doing the bridged connections; Should I use the same adapter type (Intel Pro/1000MT Desktop) for both connections?

You can use those drivers for both, inside the VM the lan is emulated. Why it hangs doing so no idea, I use the same thing on a laptop all bridged up and that works fine.

Is it possible that I didn't install correctly? Or do I maybe need some additional software/patches, etc? I'm using vBox version 3.0.2
Another thing that seems odd to me is that I can ping the guest adapters from the host but I can't ping anything from the guest.

When using a bridged adapter should I be able to ping from the guest to a device connected to the host?
Here's my application; I'm using vBox to run some software that I don't want on my host system ie; robotics programming software, industrial motor drive software, industrial GUI development software.
So I guess my question is, should I be able to ping from the guest to one of these devices?

Yes you should if the Host can as well.

Hold on. It depends on how the devices are connected to the Host. If they aren't connected through a UTP cable into your NIC, then you can't ping it. If it has an IP address but connected through USB (emulating a NIC of some sort), then you won't be able to access it without selecting the right connection in the Guest settings (if it uses a NIC emulation).

I'm connected to a robot controller using a Cat5 cross over cable. The IP address of the controller is 192.168.125.1.
I set the IP address in the host to be 192.168.125.218 and set the guest to get a IP address automatically. The guest got an IP address of 192.168.125.2 automatically.
I can ping this controller from the host but I can't ping it from the guest.

What if you configure the Guest manually, like the Host?

I still can't ping with it manually configured. However, with it manually configured I can no longer ping the guest from the host and I could before

What are the IP settings on the Host and Guest? Did you set a gateway? That isn't needed, because there is no gateway available. Everything is directly connected.

The IP Settings are

Host
IP Address 192.168.125.218
SubNet Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway n/a

Guest:
Obtain IP address Automatically
I tried setting it to
IP Address 192.168.125.3
SubNet Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway n/a
but this didn't work either

I've tried all of the available configurations and I still can't have adapter1 set for my wireless connection and adapter2 set for LAN. I even tried bridging a connection between VirtualBox Host-Only Network and the LAN on the host but that didn't work either.
I'm using vBox version 3.0.2. Does anyone know if the newer version would fix my problem?
