usb (again!) with Virtualbox 3.04, kubunbtu 9.04 x86 64
Hello
I have been using VB-sun under 9.04 for a while and had no problem with most of it. However I couldn´t get any of my usb devices to work within VB.
As far as I know I have the lastest VB (3.04) and the lastest stable version of kubuntu (that is, 9.04) (both of them from a fresh install). The usb devices (external usb hd and a hp scanner) show up on the list of available devices. I can check both or either box if I want to, but I can´t go any further. No devices are recognized by the virtual XP.
I have edited /etc/fstab to include the line
none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=46,devmode=664 0 0
but to no avail.
I thought the lastest version of VB would work straight out of the box. Dream on!
Suggestions are most welcome.
Many thanks
Ed

Checked the VirtualBox FAQ for additions since your last read? Only group membership of vboxusers should be enough. Without it, USB won't work properly. Clear your fstab, you don't need it anymore with 9.04 and 3.0.4.

That link is in the VirtualBox FAQ and since 2.1.2 no longer valid. Group membership is all that's needed now.

Weird, I'm running Jaunty and have nothing in my /etc/fstab about usbfs or whatever. Are you sure you're a member of the vboxusers group?

Yep, checked and double checked, it just didn't want to know. i read a few posts on various forums seems it may be machine related, although why or how i am not sure, it works first time for some and for others you have to jump through hoopsSasquatch wrote:Weird, I'm running Jaunty and have nothing in my /etc/fstab about usbfs or whatever. Re: usb (again!) with Virtualbox 3.04, kubunbtu 9.04 x86 64
USB is something from another world to me. None of the suggestions worked in my case. I have edit fstab, no edited fstab, group something etc and etc. The funny think is that none of my three 9.04 machines have the usb working in the VM box. The guys with the USB working straight out of the box must be blessed. It doesn't seem to be my case.
Just to be a 100% sure, what do I need to do as far as usb is concerned to get usb working with 3.04 (sun) e kubuntu 9.04?
Many thanks
Ed

All that's needed, is group membership of the vboxusers group. That's what I have and no issues whatsoever. Would it make you feel better if I tell you that I'm just really lucky with computers (also because I know quite a lot) and haven't had any or most of the problems that come here on the forums?emamm wrote:USB is something from another world to me. Re: usb (again!) with Virtualbox 3.04, kubunbtu 9.04 x86 64
I get the impression that if you are not running anything other than the plain out of the box distro, That is listed in the download page. i.e ubuntu 9.04 not kubuntu 9.04 then you are likely to encounter problems, i just tried this using linux mint, ultimate edition and plain old jaunty 9.04, only jaunty caused me no problems.

Re: usb (again!) with Virtualbox 3.04, kubunbtu 9.04 x86 64
I run Xubuntu, the Xfce version of Ubuntu. No problems whatsoever. However, I did read somewhere that the Ubuntu team somehow takes more effort in making Gnome and Xfce work properly compared to the KDE environment. That somehow has a lower priority. This is just speculation though. I installed my systems (laptop and PC) from the most minimal installation: CLI only skipping the second package install step during alternative installer. From there I build up my system with packages I absolutely need, no recommended or suggested packages. The default Ubuntu, Xubuntu and Kubuntu have a lot more installed. I doubt that any of the additional packages would cause any issues for USB in VB.

I can confirm that on my system usb under VBox works with no mods under Ubuntu 9.04-86.
Could you razy post the output of the following commands:
ls -la /proc/bus/usb
ls -la /dev/bus/usb/001

Re: usb (again!) with Virtualbox 3.04, kubunbtu 9.04 x86 64
Nothing is wrong. There is one thing I'm curious about, why do you have a /proc/bus/usb/001 folder, while I don't? This doesn't mean that that's the reason it doesn't work. One thing you can do, is check the output of the id command and compare it with mine. If I'm in a group more than you are, then that might be the problem.
The groups audio, sambashare, pulse, pulse-access and pulse-rt are groups that have nothing to do with VB, you can ignore those if you're not a member of those.
Guest Additions are not needed to get USB working.
