Virtualbox 3.0.4 Bug: Ubuntu 64bit on Windows XP 32bit

Hi,
With VirtualBoX 2.2.4, i ran Ubuntu 8.0.4 64bit guest on my Windows XP 32bit host.
But in 3.0.4, when i run Ubuntu 8.0.4 64bit, i have this error on VM boot:
Code: Select all
kernel panic not syncing attempted to kill init
I tried to create a new VM and install Ubuntu 8.0.4 64bit, but i had the same error.
Note that Ubuntu 8.0.4 32bit works fine.
Is it a bug in Vbox 3.0.4 ? Or running 64 bit OS on 32 bit OS is no more supported ?
Thanks

What if you pick a newer Ubuntu version, like 9.04?

Did you get by any change a recent kernel update? When you boot the VM, hit Esc on the Grub timer and select an older kernel, maybe the update recently, next to the VB update, is the problem. It is at least a kernel issue.

On boot, i tested all other kernel, and its always the same error.
I think it's a bug from VirtualBox 3.0.4
I stay with 2.2.4 for the moment. Wait and see

You can get older 3.0 releases too, could you install 3.0.0 and 3.0.2 and see when it happens? Start with 3.0.0, as if that's when you get errors, it's the recent new features that broke this. Maybe SMP is the problem, even though you might not have it enabled.

I will, thanks.
And do you know why we can't have more than one CPU for a 64-bit guest on a 32-bit host ? I have 8 CPU on my host, and my VM use only one ...

I dunno, it's a new feature, so probably only for 32 bit Guests available. It's in the changelog of 3.0.0.
When you're done with the tests, and 3.0.0 gives the same error, please report it in the
Bugtracker (separate account needed).

I had to go in and fiddle with the Motherboard settings. I'm installing now, so I don't know what
will happen after boot, but to get past the error I turned on both of the ACPI settings under the
"System" option
