USB Devices are all grey!

Dear Forum,

I followed the steps in the FAQ and guide for USB installation. My Virtualbox system notices the devices but lists them as unavailable.

Code: Select all

VBoxManage list usbhost (also includes other devices)
UUID: 4f783c1c-31eb-417b-9c2b-8117d519eca5
VendorId: 0x091e (091E)
ProductId: 0x0003 (0003)
Revision: 0.1 (0001)
Address: sysfs:/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:06.1/usb2/2-2/2-2.2//device:/dev/bus/usb/002/024
Current State: Unavailable
I'm running:
  • Intel core4quad
    Ubuntu 9.04 64bit (single boot)
Virtualbox 3.0.4 (latest version according to the program)
Win Vista 32 bit business edition
I've checked that I'm added to vboxusers group and added a further "usbusers" group. I'm a member of both but root is not.

I ran chmod -R 777 /etc/udev/

I added a filter for Name: Garmin Vendor: 091E Remote: Any, then plugged in the Garmin device. Now I see a range of USB devices in the vbox window but they are all greyed out. Windows doesn't see any devices but my USB mouse works fine. I also tried with the blank filter.

USB and USB 2.0 are enabled in the settings.

Dynamic kernel is installed and Ubuntu is up to date as of 30 minutes before this post.

The installed version of virtual box is from the Ubuntu repositories and marked as non-free. I'm assuming this is the right one for USB support.

Any ideas?

Richard

The default Ubuntu repo has the OSE version. You can only install the PUEL version from the repo, if you manually added it from http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads. The OSE does NOT have USB support.
