[Solved] Can't install guest additions 304 on Server 2003 R2

Post by rsd »

I'm running virtualbox 3.0.4 r50677 on ubuntu 9.04

My guest OS is Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition, Service Pack 2

I can't install version 3.0.4 of the guest additions. The VM was running fine previously but suddenly it started blue screening on boot. I booted into safe mode and attempted to install the latest guest additions, thinking it would resolve the problem. It didn't. I've found if I disable "Virtualbox Device" in the hardware device manager I can at least get into windows.

I can't install the latest guest additions in safe mode or normal mode, the install log follows:

I've tried running it as administrator explicitly, I've tried manually installing the drivers from the files it puts in the installation path, nothing works. I'm getting a bit desperate as this VM is my primary work virtual - I'm a developer, so without it running smoothly my productivity takes a major dive. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Doesn't w3k have additional security measures to prevent files from being overwritten? you might have to disable that for the moment, the access denied is a clear message.

Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be anything that simple. I downloaded the 3.0.2 Ubuntu .deb, extracted the guest additions and they install perfectly. With 3.0.2 installed it still bluescreens though, so I really need to get 3.0.4 up and running.

What is the exact BSOD code and error file?

Code is 000000CE and there is no file.

I have now managed to install 3.0.4 guest additions under safe mode, after I uninstalled PowerShell 1.0. I have no clue if it's related but I saw it caused issues with some other driver installations somewhere. After the installation of the guest additions I was still getting a BSOD, but several reboots later I've managed to get back into windows. I have no clue why. I need to get some work done so I'm not going to mess with it. Will post again if I have the same issue when I get into the office tomorrow morning and have to start the VM up.

Sorry this is all a bit vague, it's been pretty frustrating between "Access Denied" and no useful error code / driver file name on the BSOD. Error messages with no specifics are a pain.

While not related to installing the guest additions (Which seems to be resolved in 3.0.6)

This work around solved my BSOD issues with intelppm.sys:
