Cannot Reach Guest OS From Host & Vice Versa

Post by odzangba »

Host OS: Ubuntu 9.04
Guest OS: Windows XP SP3
VirtualBox Version: 3.0.4
Networking type: Host Only Networking

When I try to ping the guest from ubuntu, I get the following:

Code: Select all

PING 192.168.56.101 (192.168.56.101) 56(84) bytes of data.
ping: sendmsg: Operation not permitted
Pinging the host from windows gives me:

Code: Select all

Pinging 192.168.1.3 with 32 bytes of data:
Destination host unreachable.
The Windows IP configuration is as follows:

Code: Select all

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
        Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
        IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.56.101
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
ipconfig on ubuntu:

Code: Select all

eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:19:66:8c:e4:83
          inet addr:192.168.1.3  Bcast:192.168.1.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe80::219:66ff:fe8c:e483/64 Scope:Link

          RX bytes:1591120616 (1.5 GB)  TX bytes:176736475 (176.7 MB)
          Interrupt:253

vboxnet0  Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 0a:00:27:00:00:00
          inet addr:192.168.56.1  Bcast:192.168.56.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe80::800:27ff:fe00:0/64 Scope:Link
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:248 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B)  TX bytes:33648 (33.6 KB)
Consequently, I cannot access any network services on the host (from the guest) and vice versa. Should I be doing something differently?

Your're pinging the wrong address, re-read your own post again. After that, maybe firewall issues.
