3.0.4 upgrade, XP Guest Freezes on Network Activity

Post by Nev Delap »

(I originally posted this as a reply to the other thread about XP guests locking up, but that seemed like a more general problem. This one is specifically and repeatably networking related, so I've made it its own thread).

I've found pages describing a similar problem to mine and saying the problem was fixed in 3.0.2, but I'm running 3.0.4 and the following happens...

1/ When booting an XP virtual machine configured with a PCnet-FAST III adapter (which the virtual machine has a driver for, as used fine in Virtualbox 2.x.x) the virtual machine freezes during boot. (Virtualbox itself is still responsive).

2/ Changing it to be configured with an Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (which it doesn't have a driver for, yet) the machine boots fine and works fine. Configuring it with no network adapter also works fine.

3/ Immediately on installing the driver for the Intel PRO/1000 MT the virtual machine freezes. (Virtualbox is still responsive).

These scenarios are 100% reliably repeatable.

Host - Ubuntu 9.04, Guest - Windows XP Pro.

Let me know what I can do in regards to sending you more info to debug.

Cheers,

Nev

Do not assign any network to the Guest, install intell drivers, shutdown, enable Guest network and boot Guest.
These versions work fine:

12.812.288 PRO2KXP_v13_5.exe
13.867.656 PROEM64T_v13_5.exe
11.997.136 PROVISTA32_v13_5.exe
13.182.760 PROVISTAX64_v13_5.exe

Thanks for quick reply.

When you say "Do not assign any network to the Guest" I assume you mean don't assign it any network adapters? So I've tried this but on installation of the drivers (PRO2KXP_v13_5.exe) it says it can't do it because no adapters exist in the computer. So I then re-enabled the PRO/1000 MT and attempted installing PRO2KXP_v13_5.exe. This result in the same freeze as described before. The one I was previously trying was PRO2KXP_v14_0.exe and I've also just tried PRO2KXP_v14_2.exe as well. Still the same freeze.

You might first try to remove the GA fully, reboot Guest and install GA 3.04, reboot Guest. It feels like something got left behind from the last GA version (not directly lan related).

Ok, I removed the guest additions, rebooted, took a snapshot, reinstalled them (3.0.4), rebooted, and installed the network driver, and it froze. I then went back to that snapshot and attempted to install the driver without the guest additions, and it froze.

Now I'm going to install a fresh Windows XP guest and see what that does.

BTW, I installed 3.0.4 when I did a complete install from scratch of Ubuntu 9.04 - I switched from Kubuntu 9.04 the day before yesterday. So the only thing in common between when it was working on 2.x.x and not working on 3.0.4 is the vdi file of my virtual machine.
