Newbie to Virtual Box Help on Request

Post by DudeSees »

Greetings,

Anyone please help. Downloaded PUEL version of VB 3.0.4, just trying to figure this thing out.
Infamous "FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted." Looking for XP install.

1.) Where do you find the actual ISO images that work with VB.
2.) I have XP Install disk from MicroSoft, am I suppose to you this? I dont think so?

Read already about the mounting ISO/CD/DVD Rom with enable pass through checked. Tried different ISO images etc. Read the manual. Have tried to follow the links on the webpage. Almost all assume that you loaded the file and then need help?

I need help loading the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso file. With install seems like this file was included. Have since downloaded VBoxGuestAdditions_3.0.4.iso. Also downloaded XP iso directly from MicroSoft. Same Message. Even deleted and reinstalled, tried different OS??

Newbie thanks to all post!!!

Yes you use your own install media for the guest. Put it in the CD and select the Host CD/DVD in the CD/DVD section of the guest

First, read the Forum Posting Guide for our rules. Asking for illegal software will get you banned for a set time (usually a month).
Second, read the VirtualBox FAQ to know what a VM is, and how to use it. Deal with it like it's a new computer without OS.

Keep in mind that you can't use your existing license in the VM. That license is bound by hardware and it's already installed and registered for your Host.

Thanks guys for your post. Just to be clear - I was not attempting to get any illegal software. In my ignorance I thought there was a library we could download for free/or a nominal fee - different OS's to work with VB. Wouldn't that be nice... Thanks for the info just the same. Ok so this is what I understand:

1.) My Software, that I own is to be used to load into VB.
2.) I am to treat/approach the VB just like a new computer without an OS installed.
3.) That my current Personal Computer's "Operating System" is already bound to the Host and can not be used for the VB/VM
install.
4.) VB/VM provides a level of isolation to run an OS that I already own as a guest on my host system unit.
5.) That any OS that I choose to run, "I must own," and need only install-setup the VM from the VB install methodology.
6.) That the (excerpt from guide), ..."Guest Additions are designed to be installed inside a virtual machine after the guest
operating system has been installed. They consist of device drivers and system applications that optimize the
guest operating system for better performance and usability."

Please correct any of these points that you find incorrect or for clarification. The two answers I received from you Perryg and Sasquatch were very direct and fully understood.

Appreciate your time and the members of this forum. Thank you.

I was just pointing out that you should ask for illegal software. I first read that you were asking where to download a copy, but after I read it again, you asked a general question. Rule still stands though ;).

An addition to my license warning: The VM emulates it's own hardware, so if you install your own license in it, MS will see a new hardware ID on it's activation server and could strip you from the 'genuine' list.

So far you're in the right direction. Mount the ISO/CD, start the VM and install the OS you want as if you're installing a clean system. It's perfect to try out Linux for example, or test some software without making a mess of the Host installation.
