do I need to install antivirus software on my guest OS (Vista) or will the AV on the host machine (Kaspersky) cover the guest OS?

You need something for a Guest, as the Host is isolated from the Guest.

A VM is a separate machine, so yes. This has been asked dozens of times before. Please try to search next time.

Thanks for your help, I actually did do a search but got a lot of results and did not find any that related to my question.

Next time I will search more thoroughly.
