[Solved] XP: Export -> Import appliance problem

Hi,

I've installed actual version of VirtualBox (3.0.4) on XP SP3 machine. Everything went fine and I've successfully created a virtual machine (also XP SP3).

Then I've tried to export machine and import it on another computer, also XP SP3. First boot on new machine went fine, everything worked well, but during first shutdown of imported virtual machine blue screen appeared for a few moments and virtual machine was crashed.

I can't boot anymore, while loading Windows blue screen appears and disappears very fast and machine restarts itself. If I choose "Load last known good configuration" during startup Windows can boot again, but only until next Windows restart/shutdown.

Please help..

I suspect the reason is the first machine is 64 bit and the second one is 32 bit. Can you confirm this?
If so then the reason is due to a wrong kernel version for the second machine.

Yes, it's true - computer with imported machine has 64bit processor and machine was created on 32bit processor (but both computers are running 32bit XP as host). So, it's not possible to use it because of that?

Sure you can.
You just need to boot the new install in safe mode and change the setting in device manager to use the non IO APIC kernel and then shut down. Take the tick out of the IO APIC and boot the guest.

I've just checked computer configurations:

1st computer:
  • Windows XP SP2 32bit
  • 64bit Intel dual core processor
2nd computer:
  • Windows XP SP3 32bit
  • 64bit Intel core 2 duo processor
New install (and problem) is on 2nd computer.

Anyway, I've tried your suggestion - no success. I'm not sure how to set use of IO APIC from device manager so I've used steps from this link http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=21480

You need to look at the settings for the first PC and then compare them to the second one. By default the 64 bit flag is set to on and disregarded in the PC that does not support 64 bit. Make sure that the flag is set to off on the 64 bit PC and that the settings match, then see if you can get it to boot by selecting revert to last known at boot of guest and hopefully it will not pick up anything that will change it.

Yes, but both computers support 64bit architecture, I've figured that later (in my third post). Sorry for that.

Do both support VT-x/AMD-v in the bios, and if so is it on in both?

I've enabled all Virtualization options in BIOS of new computer, everything works well now! Thank you, you were very patient and kind.
