I just recenetly update to VB V3.0.4 and did a clean install of the latest Open Solaris ( 5.11 snv_119 i86pc i386 i86pc ). Now I have no keyboard and mouse control under VB ( Solaris ), at least not by default. Here's the explanation.
During the boot process, I do have keyboard functionality. So I can select from the boot menu, or hit F12 to select the boot device, etc. This is obviously an indication that VB seems to be seeing the USB keyboard correctly. At this point I don't know if the mouse is functional because it's not yet in graphics mode. This is true during the entire boot process. For instance, when the VB guest screen is still in character cell mode, before X starts, I can quickly hit enter and log in.
After graphics starts, I attempt to log in and get no keyboard activity on the login screen. Of course, then I issue a restart to the guest, and during the reboot sequence, it stops X. What I noticed is that what I was attempting to type in the graphics display was getting there, I saw what I was typing now in character cell mode.
I was also able to force the USB keyboard to be used in graphics mode by selecting it from the menu ( Devices->USB Devices->Match the device ID ). I matched the keyboard's device ID by finding it on the properties page in Vista's Device Manager. Of course, now the down side was I couldn't "seemlessly" move back and forth between VB and Vista unless I disabled it under VB first.
So far, this SEEMS to be indicating the real issue here is that Xorg under Open Solaris isn't configured correctly, but I can't quite find out why. I did install the Guest Addtions package and rebooted ( just in case you were wondering ).
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: VB USB Keyboard & Mouse
Sound like your Host keyboard is being grabbed as a usb device by the Guest, have you disabled usb for the Guest?
