Keyboard 'stutter' with remote desktop

Post by J2R »

I've run into a problem with VirtualBox when accessing a guest system via remote desktop - quite often (but with no obvious pattern) my keystrokes get repeated, sometime many times, so that 'keyboard', say, might end up as 'kkkkkeeyyyyyyybboardddd'. It doesn't happen all the time, but often enough to have rendered the system unusable. This is with VirtualBox 3.0.4 on Windows Vista, running a Kubuntu 8.04 guest, accessed from a remote XP machine using Remote Desktop Connection. It happened as well under VB 2.2.4, and I upgraded to 3.0.4 in the hope of resolving it, but with no joy. The keyboard 'stutter' does not happen when working with the guest system locally (not over RDP). And it happens whether I connect directly via vRDP to the guest system, or via Remote Desktop to the host. I've searched the archives for answers to this problem but nothing has come up. Any suggestions what the problem might be and how to get around it?

Do some tests with real rdp and vrdp, there is a world of difference between them, real rdp should work fine, even with rdp embedded linux distro's.

Not sure what you mean by 'real' RDP here. Is a Remote Desktop connection to the Windows host machine not 'real' RDP? As I explained, the problem occurs both with this and vRDP. Is there some other way I could be using RDP here?

vRDP is a VBox internal system for Guests that don't have a rdp server build in, using the native OS rdp is always better.

So you reckon that if I can get an RDP server running in my Linux guest that might be better?
